A Note from the Directors' Desks

The Holiday season is flying toward us, and if you’ve been following Write On’s activity over the past few weeks, you know how busy we’ve been.

In this edition of “The Write Now,” you’ll find information regarding Write On, Door County’s recent partnerships with the 8142 Review - the Pulse’s newest print addition - and the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department.

Additionally, you’ll find information about Write On’s Young Writers Conference, our 2021 Annual Fund, #GivingTuesday, the continued growth of our Members Only Facebook Group, and upcoming events.

In closing, we want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support. As 2021 comes to a close, we can’t say enough how grateful we are for all of the wonderful opportunities our organization has been presented with over the last 12 months.

We hope you and your family enjoyed Thanksgiving.

Warmly,

Here Comes the Fund

Keep an eye on your mailbox! On November 15th, the Write On team spent the day stuffing envelopes for our 2021 Annual Fund. This is our biggest fundraising event of the year.

Know that your donation to our Annual Fund will directly benefit literacy programming all throughout Door County, and with #GivingTuesday right around the corner, there has never been a better time to support reading and writing in our community.

In 2021, donations of:
  • $30 supported free registrations for writing classes at our Center.
  • $70 sponsored memberships to families in our community.
  • $150 gave more children the opportunity to participate in our Kids WOW Summer Camp - allowing more young minds to learn the powers of writing.
  • $500 provided local K-12 classrooms with regularly occurring writing programs, featuring visiting artists from around the world.
  • $2500 donations brought celebrated and distinguished writers to our nationally recognized residency on Juddville Road.

Hal Prize Winners & the NEW 8142 Review

The Peninsula Pulse has announced the recipients of the 2021 Hal Prize for writing and photography! This year’s honorees were selected from the largest field of submissions in the contest’s 24-year history.

Of 874 submissions, 26 were selected as winners and honorable mentions for the 2021 Hal Prize.  Those selections will be featured in a new publication, the 8142 Review.

What started out as an annual literary edition of the Pulse has grown into its own publication. 8142 Review is not a replacement for the Hal Prize, but an expansion of it and is a new home for the creative talents of their submitters. Within its pages, you will find stories about family, farmlands and addictions, love affairs and ailing hearts, and photos capturing moments in time and stories untold.

In addition to the winners and honorable mentions, the 8142 Review introduces the judges for the 2022 Hal Prize: Angela Palm Hopkins (nonfiction), Joshua Philip Johnson (fiction), Adrian Matejka (poetry) and Lars Topelmann (photography).

A Partnership to Preserve History

Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department Chief Chris Hecht announced a new oral history project to collect and preserve the fire department’s history through personal narrations and storytelling.

“Preserving our history goes way beyond collection and documentation,” Hecht said. “This project honors the people of our community and gives life to the links between our past and present.”

The fire department’s history dates to 1930 and there are several living connections to the firefighters who were part of those early days, according to Hecht. “We don’t want to let this history slip through our fingers, so it is imperative we do the project now,” he said.

Anyone with connections to former members of the department or relevant historical information, can contact the SBLGFD oral history project’s director, Maryanne O’Dowd, at nordoorfirehistory@gmail.com.
