New Book from Interpreting Consolidated
Gentle into the Darkness: A Deaf Mother’s Journey into Alzheimer’s, by Canadian author and Coda Patricia Conrad, is back in our catalogue in a revised edition.
Hendrika came to the Alberta prairie as a six-year-old Dutch immigrant in 1929, and lost her hearing to meningitis soon after. The drought of the 1930s was a terrible time to be farming. For Hendrika there were limited opportunities for education and later, employment, for Deaf individuals. Conrad tells her mother's story with compassion and love, exploring the bicultural experience of hearing children with Deaf parents and her mother's final decade facing her greatest challenge - Alzheimer's disease.
