Outdoor Meeting for Worship, Sunday, November 21 @ 9 AM

Outdoor Meeting for Worship will be held rain or shine this Sunday at 9 am on the back lawn of the meetinghouse (or under the shelter of the roof in case of rain), in addition to our usual 10:30 am hybrid worship. Online sign-ups are no longer required.

Please note these additional parameters:
  • No chairs from the meetinghouse will be available. Seating is bring-your-own chair (or blanket) and will be socially distanced. Household groups can sit together.  Friends will be able to use the bathrooms in the meetinghouse.
  • To ensure physical distancing, attendees should plan to be seated at their place for the full hour.
  • Please do not sign up or attend if you:
    • have recently had any symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, shortness of breath, or loss of taste;
    • have recently been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Giant Children's Meeting for Worship, Sunday, November 21 @ 9 AM

PYM Giant Children's Meeting is back, now on 3rd Sundays.  It’s “giant” because everyone is invited! It’s “children’s meeting” because it's a space to nurture the spiritual lives and Quaker identity of young people.  November's theme is Extending the Table.  Register on the PYM website.

Hybrid Meeting for Worship, Sunday, November 21 @ 10:30 AM

Meeting for Worship will start at 10:30 am, both online and in person at the meetinghouse.  For those attending in person, the following guidelines will be in effect:
  • We recommend that people be vaccinated before returning to the meetinghouse.
  • We are once again asking that everyone wear masks while they are in the meetinghouse.
  • Households may sit together, but attenders from different households should spread themselves out within the meeting room.
  • For the time being, there will be no social hour in the meeting house, so please plan to take your conversations outside after the rise of meeting.
  • Please do not sign up or attend if you:
    • have recently had any symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, shortness of breath, or loss of taste;
    • have recently been in close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

To get an item included in the announcements after Meeting for Worship, please e-mail Worship & Ministry Committee with the details by Friday night. Be sure to include all relevant dates, times, and locations as well as the name of a contact person for more information.  This will allow the information to be pasted into the chat window during announcements.

While Friends are encouraged to invite others to our virtual meeting for worship -- just as they would to an in-person meeting -- please do not post these links to social media or other Internet sites.  While some meetings are hosting global meetings with hundreds of participants, we are trying, as best we can in these times, to replicate the feel of our own weekly meeting for worship.

Zoom Visit from Interfaith Philadelphia, Sunday, November 21 @ Rise of Meeting

A group from Interfaith Philadelphia will be joining our hybrid worship on Zoom on Sunday. They will introduce their group after worship and linger in the Zoom room to ask questions, ending no later than 12:15 before meeting for business. Anyone who would like to stay and join the discussion is welcome.

Worship Last Sunday @ CHFM

Just over 15 Friends were at the meetinghouse and about 45 Friends were on Zoom from near and far (the Adirondacks, Florida, Colombia, Ecuador) for hybrid meeting for worship.  Four messages were offered out of the silence by Friends in the meetinghouse and on Zoom.

Thanks to Craig DeLarge, who served as Zoom host, and to Jon Landau, who set up the computer at the meetinghouse.  More Friends are needed to help in these ways.  Send an email to onlineworshipsupport@chestnuthillquakers.org to find out more or to volunteer for either of these roles.  There's training available and neither requires job requires technical expertise.  Betsy Wallace, attending on Zoom, was the member of Worship & Ministry with care of worship.  Gratitude to all these Friends for caring for our community.

Midweek Meeting for Worship, Tuesday, November 23 @ 9 AM

CHFM offers midweek worship on Tuesday mornings from 9 to 10 via Zoom. The stable link for the Zoom sessions is https://zoom.us/j/95949514802?pwd=KzBRWHZWL0QyS3JOYWlVbnlyU2p4dz09,  We will have waiting worship for the first 30 minutes and then we plan to read excerpts from the new edition of Faith and Practice, followed by worship sharing.  All are welcome.

From the Religious Education Committee

  • Religious Education Committee is looking for a teacher for the nursery room. See the description on the CHFM website. Send resume and cover letter to fdscoord@chestnuthillquakers.org.
  • We have a group of middle school aged friends meeting virtually each Sunday for lessons and conversations on famous quakers and Quakerism. We would love to have members of the meeting sign up to join these conversations to add your perspectives and experience to the conversation and to get to know our fabulous young friends. Specifically, we ask you to commit to joining one conversation from 10:45-11:30 am on a Sunday. During the lesson, there will be another individual leading the session and you will be asked to participate in the conversation. For example, in a recent lesson, the class learned about the life of Lucretia Mott and her work as an abolitionist and suffragette and discussed the types of advocacy that Quakers today dedicate their lives to. To sign up or to learn more, please contact Donna Pucci at fdscoord@chestnuthillquakers.org. AND we are also always looking for individuals to take it one step further and help us lead lessons. If you are able to commit to leading a lesson, please also reach out!

From Friends General Conference

Friends General Conference (FGC) has invited Quakers nationwide to join an online reading group for the book Fit for Freedom, Not for Friendship - Quakers, African Americans and the Myth of Racial Justice by Donna McDaniel and Vanessa Julye. The group will meet on 3rd Mondays 5-7 pm PST ( which is 8-10 pm on the East Coast) beginning on Monday, November 22. One of the authors, Vanessa Julye (Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting), will join the discussion on November 22nd, for the start of the reading group.  More information and registration is available at the FCG website.

From PIHN

Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network is looking for a few people who understand and support the mission of PIHN to join their board.  We have a solid core of dedicated board members, however the agency would benefit especially from anyone with experience and skill in the following areas: Finance and accounting, law. especially housing and family, property management, real estate, marketing. and fundraising. This is not an exhaustive list and we look forward to hearing from anyone who has experience relevant to our mission. Please contact Nick Clayton (mysticalwolves93@gmail.com) or Laverne Jones, (lavernemjones@gmail.com).

Zoom Help & Tutorials

A few other notes about Zoom:
  • A small number of Friends are making themselves available for assistance with technical issues before or during Meeting for Worship.  You can email that group at OnlineWorshipSupport@chestnuthillquakers.org; please also use that address to reach out during Meeting for Worship if you have technical trouble. If you have trouble connecting, please check the Zoom system status page before emailing to see if there are any system-level outages.
  • A particularly Quakerly Zoom tip:  Look to the Light!  If you arrange yourself for a Zoom meeting with a window or a lamp in front of you rather than behind you, we'll all be able to enjoy each other's familiar faces.
  • The links above should take you directly to Zoom meetings.  If, for whatever reason, the link does not work, you can open the Zoom app, click join meeting, and enter the meeting ID number.
  • When Meeting for Worship begins, everyone's microphone will be muted by the host.  If you feel moved to give ministry, you can unmute your microphone.  You will be able to hear the ministry of others even while your microphone is muted.  When your ministry concludes, please mute yourself again to reduce background noise.
  • If you call in by phone, you can use *6 to mute and unmute yourself.
