Three Times Through

Saturday, November 20th, 6:00 PM PST

The Wild Eye Pub, 535 Mill St., Grass Valley, CA

People stop, stare, and ask us, 'What is that instrument?' We are a colorful funky kinda Celtic string quartet. We re-imagine and blend traditional and modern tunes and songs with hammered dulcimer, bodhran, concertina, mandolin, bouzouki, banjo, fiddle and guitar. The emphasis is on eclectic Celtic music; spirited instrumentals, engaging vocals and haunting melodies.

Our a cappella vocals transport you to the North Sea, the Caribbean, or to a remote village pub in County Clare . . . Come curious, leave refreshed!

BATCH: Christmas Past Holiday Market

BatchMakers Market Victorian Holiday theme event
2155 3rd Street Livermore, Carnegie Park downtown

11:00 AM & 12:15 PM, on the gazebo stage.
Michael's Facebook Profile
Batch Victorian

Mark your calendars for BATCH: A Makers Market every third Sunday of the month May to November from 9-2pm, alongside the Farmers Market, so you can shop both with ease!

Each month has a new theme & this for our 2021 Finale we are presenting a Victorian themed holiday market complete with historic costumed actors, the Judy & Punch Puppet show and musician Michael Mullen.

We'll have 50+ makers & implement safety procedures to ensure a healthy shopping environment. We also suggest a contactless form of payment such as Venmo or PayPal to keep cash transactions to a minimum, but our performers do welcome gratuity!

Fiddler Michael Mullen will step out of the lockdown and onto our stage alone. Those who have seen Michael play with various bands or as his live-looping Trio Of One will enjoy the rare treat to see him perform completely by himself--no partners, no embellishments, no safety net. Michael's fiddle shine's unadorned on traditional and original Scottish and Celtic jigs and reels, and he will reveal hidden strengths on guitar and octave mandolin as song accompaniment. Michael's memorable song choices and innovative arrangements will hold the listener's ears and engage their hearts and minds.

Michael says:
This Sunday at 11:00 AM & 12:15 PM, I am performing Alone, on the gazebo stage in Carnegie Park in Livermore.

Lots of old Scottish songs and fiddle tunes were hot new hits in the Victorian era, and besides, people tell me "that Celtic stuff you play all sounds like Christmas music".

It will be just me and my fiddle or octave mando (maybe guitar, still yet to be determined). I've been working on seasonal material for the occasion, as well as some tried and true songs and tunes. I call this new era of my performance endeavor "the unlooping", cause, y'know, there's no looping. Don't worry looping fans, I'll get back to that eventually, I'm sure. Anyway, back to work. See ya Sunday!

As always admission is free & we are family and leashed pup friendly!

Check the Facebook Event for more details.

Every Christmas for the past twenty-six years, Tomáseen Foley's A Celtic Christmas has crisscrossed the country, bringing to packed venues his authentic remembrance of a way of life that is, alas, no longer with us. A truly family-friendly event.

'When I was a child, it was around the fireplaces of my neighbors' thatched cottages that I experienced the last remnants of the old communal way of life,' says Tomáseen. 'The family was the center of the community then, and the community was the center of life itself, the shining axle around which the great wheel of the universe revolved. Stories, music, song and dance were the spokes of that slowly turning wheel.' - Tomáseen Foley

Now in its 26th season of touring nationally, Tomáseen Foley's A Celtic Christmas recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a remote farmhouse in his native parish of Teampall an Ghleanntáin in the west of Ireland in the 1950s — when the neighboring families would gather around the fire to grace the wintry night with traditional Irish Christmas carols, to raise the rafters with the joy of their music; to knock sparks off the flagstone floor with their traditional dances. And, of course, there were stories — they filled the night with the laughter of their stories.

Michelle Drown of The Santa Barbara Independent has said of Foley: 'A good storyteller can spin a captivating yarn from the most mundane topics. They can carry their audience to another time and place. It's an art—and a gift—and Tomáseen Foley has it in spades. Called a seanchaí in Gaelic, the storyteller has played an invaluable role in Ireland's long, ancient history. Foley thankfully is doing his part to keep that tradition alive.' She continued, 'Peppered throughout the storytelling were music and dance. With today's world of lightning-fast communication, it was a privilege to spend time in a rural cottage in the west of Ireland, listening to 'old lore' and traditional music.'

Storyteller/Director Tomáseen Foley grew up cradled in a culture unique to the old communal way of life, and continues to share the joy of that upbringing. In conjunction with the Omaha Symphony and other orchestras, he performs in Celtic Journey as well as occasional performances with Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra. He has released two CDs: Parcel From America, and a live recording, The Priest and the Acrobat. Rego Irish Records said of Foley, 'He is a master of the Irish narrative and a keeper of the flame for a priceless piece of Irish culture.' For further information, visit: www.tomaseenfoley.com.

Santa Cruz resident and Grammy Award winner William Coulter is the show's longtime Music Director. An internationally recognized master of the steel-string guitar, he has been performing and recording traditional Celtic and American folk music for more than 30 years. Coulter studied classical guitar and earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of CA Santa Cruz, a master's degree in music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, an a second master's degree from the University of CA Santa Cruz in Ethnomusicology. He now teaches guitar at UC Santa Cruz as well as the National Guitar Summer Workshop, Alasdair Fraser's Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School, and the Puget Sound Guitar Workshop. For further information, visit http://williamcoulterguitar.com.

Violinist Edwin Huizinga is a world-travelled artist known for combining traditional and classical pieces with new sounds and ideas. He loves to compose and works with a vast number of artists in the worlds of rock and roll, ambient music, folk music, Baroque music, and opera. He and co-star William Coulter are the musical duo Fire & Grace, well known in the Santa Cruz area; in addition, Huizinga is also on the Artistic Leadership team of the Carmel Bach Festival; a founding member of ACRONYM, a world-renowned baroque ensemble; and has recently become the Artistic Director of the Sweetwater Music Festival. His latest commissions are for Opera Atelier and the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada. For further information, visit www.edwinhuizinga.com. Huizinga will be in the Santa Cruz performance only.

The Plough and Stars Update

Wednesday — Sunday 4 to 12 PM

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco, CA

COVID Policy
Vaccination and Masks
Required Indoors
Make sure you bring your proof of vaccination when you come to The Plough.
Sean Heaney says:
Music at the Plough is back. We aren hosting an instrumental Irish Traditional session Sunday afternoons at 3:00 PM and a song session lead by Christy O'Connell and Vince Keehan on the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 PM. Drop by for a pint!

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, is known around the world for hosting incredible Irish music and pulling beautiful pints of Guinness since 1975. Since then, it has evolved to host live music every night of the week, except Monday, including all genres of music; Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Zydeco, acoustic Americana, and of course, Irish Traditional.

Over the years The Plough and the Stars in San Francisco has hosted many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe, but the COVID pandemic and related public health restrictions put a stop to all that for over a year. The resulting business losses threatened to put The Plough out of business permanently, but a sustained community crowdfunding effort helped keep it going, and now it appears to have emerged intact.

Starry Session

Starry Session Online

First Sunday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 PM

Online via YouTube for The Starry Plough, 3101 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley, CA

The pandemic shut down the well loved Starry Plough in Berkeley a year ago, halting the Sunday night Irish session and Monday night Irish dancing that had been hosted there for decades.

A small group of Plough regulars are convening electronically, and have begun a monthly open session online, on the first Sunday of the month, running for two hours and starting at 8:00 PM. It kicked off on Easter Sunday, as that holiday has always been a time for new beginnings--particularly in Ireland.

The online Starry Session is live-streamed on YouTube allowing other people listen, play, sing or dance along. It works like this: individuals among a pre-selected group of musicians will be called upon to lead a dance tune or song in rotation. Everyone else is on mute; they can follow the music at home with their own instruments or voices or whatever. It's not as magical as being able to hear each other, but it can still be surprisingly therapeutic.

You can tune in on THIS YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMR8XRkX_HX9NdL7bRKCp-g

Other ringleaders of this effort are Don Clark, Sean Wahl, Michele Delattre and Shay Black, so you might see communications from any of them as this process goes forward.

DukeofEdinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant
Across from Apple Park

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

Open 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA

Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.

More info. on The Duke Facebook Page, website www.theduke.com or call 408-446-3853.
