Act Now to Urge Your Representative to Sign onto the Foster-Kelly Letter Asking for Swift Delivery of the ONC Report on Patient Matching

 Advocacy Alert

We need you to ask your Representative to sign onto a letter from Representative Bill Foster (D-IL) and Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA) requesting that the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) deliver its report on patient matching to Congress as soon as possible.

In the Fiscal Year 2020 (FY20) Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, Congress directed ONC to provide a report on patient identification and matching. ONC has been working over the past two years to prepare this report, originally due to Congress in December 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to exacerbate issues with patient identification and matching which endanger patient safety and privacy.

This year, both the House Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) bill and the Senate draft Labor-HHS bill have removed Section 510 from their bills, which has historically been a barrier to moving forward a national strategy on patient identification. Now more than ever, Congress needs the recommendations from this report to continue progress towards accurately matching patients with their data.

AHIMA needs your help to reach out to your Representative and urge them to sign onto the Foster-Kelly letter and encourage delivery of this vital report to Congress.

Have You Met Your AHIMA Recertification Requirements?

If your recertification cycle expires at the end of this year and you have not yet met the requirements for renewal, visit our website to verify your status and take the necessary steps to complete the recertification process. Avoid an inactive status by visiting your CEU Center and submitting the required CEUs with your supporting documentation. To take advantage of the member discount on recertification fees, you must purchase a membership prior to or on the recertification expiration date. Once the membership is paid, your recertification discount will be applied.

As a reminder, each year a percentage of credential holders are randomly selected for an audit. Individuals selected for audits will be required to submit verifiable documentation (for example, certificates of attendance or similar materials) for each activity listed in their CEU Center.

More information on recertification requirements can be found in this Recertification Guide.

New Volunteer Inpatient and Outpatient Coding Roundtable Positions

The MoHIMA Board of Directors would like to announce that Kay Piper, Coding Roundtable Coordinator for almost a decade has resigned her position as the current Coding Roundtable Coordinator for the State of Missouri.  Kay has served in that role and been an asset in our Coding Roundtable efforts for a number of years and we truly appreciate all that she has given in her time and knowledge to our State HIM Professionals.    She is definitely tried and true to the Coding world.

The MOHIMA Board of Directors based on Kay’s resignation looked at current trends and decided that we need to break out the Inpatient and Outpatient coding efforts due to their complexity and knowledge requirements.

The MoHIMA Board of Directors would like to announce that we currently have 2 vacant volunteer positions.    We have created positions for Inpatient Coding Roundtable Coordinator and Outpatient Coding Roundtable Coordinators. Both of these positions will report to the MoHIMA Education Directors.

We are looking for 2 strong Coding individuals that would be responsible for our Coding Roundtable efforts across the State of Missouri.

If you are interested in learning more about these roles you can reach out to me at Clark.Chaffin@coxhealth.com or 417-269-6144.

Thank you!

ACT NOW!  Tell the Senate to Support the Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act

 Advocacy Alert

The bipartisan "Improving Seniors’ Timely Access to Care Act" has recently been introduced in the US Senate. We need your outreach to build support for this important legislation.

Prior authorization continues to be the number one administrative burden identified by healthcare providers. In a 2018 report by the US Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of the Inspector General, it was found that Medicare Advantage Organizations (MAOs) overturned 75 percent of their own denials each year. These denials risk patient safety and add burdens to an already overburdened healthcare system.

A 2020 survey from the American Medical Association stated that 30 percent of physicians reported that prior authorization requirements have led to a serious adverse event for a patient in their care. This legislation would modernize the way Medicare Advantage plans and healthcare providers use prior authorization, removing unnecessary steps and complications for patients while streamlining administrative processes associated with prior authorization.

As an AHIMA member, you are the voice of health information on the Hill.

Contact your US Senators and ask them to support this vital legislation. Click the link below to email your Members of Congress now.

AHIMA Foundation

Dear Members and Supporters,

October is Health Literacy Month, the perfect time for us to launch our Health Literacy for Health Equity initiative. This multi-year project offers an interactive path to increasing health literacy and empowering consumers with the tools and resources to better manage their health.

To succeed, we need your support. As a 501(c)3 charitable organization, 100% of our initiatives are funded by donors.

Why Health Literacy?

A recent survey commissioned by the AHIMA Foundation found that most Americans leave health encounters feeling confused and frustrated about the health information they receive from their doctors.
Top-line results from the quantitative survey found that 3 in 4 Americans do not leave their doctor’s office on a positive note for reasons that include disappointment in the level of Q&A they have with their doctor, confusion about their health, and a need to do more research.

This lack of understanding is shared by most Americans, with nearly 2 in 3 respondents admitting they are not extremely confident in their understanding of the health information they discuss with their doctor.
Access to and understanding of health records and information is critical to consumer health management. Unfortunately, more than half of respondents (52%) report that they rarely access their medical records to review their health information. In fact, 1 in 4 Americans don’t know where to go to access their medical and health information.

Eliminate Barriers to Health Literacy

The centerpiece of our initiative is the Better Health is In Your Hands campaign, the main hub of which is a consumer-centered microsite designed to provide patients with accessible, easy-to-understand, and bi-lingual resources to help them navigate their health information with confidence.

To ensure everything we create is understandable to all audiences, we have:
  • Created a cross-disciplinary steering committee to support our campaign and programming. With backgrounds in health systems, advocacy organizations, academia, research, and private industry, this group of 13 members brings the diversity of experience and the depth of knowledge necessary to tackle the gaps and opportunities in the area of health literacy and equity
  • Ensured that the Better Health Is in Your Hands website is presented in English and Spanish translation versions
Developed educational resources to help healthcare professionals create an empowering environment for patients, including our recent AHIMA21 plenary session, promoted recent AHIMA policy statements related to health literacy, including individual access to health informationhealth equity, and social determinants of health and boosted health literacy awareness on our social channels, including TwitterFacebook, and LinkedIn.

Health Literacy for Health Equity

As healthcare moves closer to an idealized vision of value-based, patient-centered care, the AHIMA Foundation recognizes that the consumer’s ability to consistently access their own health data and to understand and use that information with confidence remains a significant gap.

With Health Literacy for Health Equity, our goal is to help consumers become collaborators in their own health and care. Achieving this goal requires:
  • Building awareness around the AHIMA Foundation, its mission, and its initiatives for both consumers and care providers
  • Developing and disseminating tools and resources that help consumers and providers improve health literacy
  • Collaborate with industry stakeholders, both public and private, to engage and shape the Health Literacy for Health Equity initiative

You Make the Difference

The Foundation’s ability to expand and sustain our program depends solely on the financial support we receive from our donors.
Momentum is essential to success. We appreciate your support to fund the dynamic initiatives necessary to impact individuals and communities, collaborate with key allies, and close essential gaps in health literacy and equity.

Without you, programs like Health Literacy for Health Equity, Scholarship, and HIRO Funds, would not be possible. Every gift makes a difference.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Megan McVane
