News This Week: 11/14 - 11/20

According to new research by the Guttmacher Institute, the impact of Texas’ ban on abortion after six weeks (S.B. 8)  is being felt in states as far away as California and Maryland.

  • Researchers gathered data from 120 clinics in 28 states and the District of Columbia and found “excluding the four states that border Texas, 11 states and DC had an increase in the number of abortions provided to Texas residents.”
  • The Texas Policy Evaluation Project also documented a 50% decline in the number of abortions performed in Texas clinics since the passage of S.B. 8, almost 2,200 in September 2021 compared with 4,300 in September 2020.

A poll by ABC News and The Washington Post found that the majority of Americans support Roe v. Wade and don’t want lawmakers to make it harder for abortion clinics to operate.

  • In the survey, 60% believe that the Supreme Court should uphold Roe, 58% oppose state legislature making it harder for clinics to operate and 75% believe that an abortion should be left to the woman and her to doctor to decide.
