Hello,

Here is your weekly Brain Tickle Newsletter from TechTello - Learn and be better everyday.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK

"Ostriches bury their heads in the sand when they sense danger assuming that the danger will pass if they just avoid it long enough. We humans are no different. When dealing with unpleasant information, or information that challenges us in a way that we don’t want to be challenged, we pretend the information doesn’t exist. We bury our heads in the sand just like the ostriches."

Are You Avoiding Unpleasant Information?

EXPLORE

"Work life for many is in a mushy middle ground, and what’s at stake isn’t just who is getting talked over in meetings. It’s whether flexibility is sustainable, even with all the benefits it confers. Hybrid is most definitely tougher than completely in person or completely remote. It takes a lot more forethought, and none of us, or anybody else at any company, has figured out exactly how it’s going to work. It’s not hard to imagine all of the ways remote workers might be undercut: muted in a heated discussion, shut out of lunchtime bonding. At many workplaces the in-person employees feel just as neglected. The companies that accepted that this is going to be difficult and communicated that clearly to their teams are going to thrive. There’s no more hoping for Christmas, hoping for Easter. Let’s just accept that this will be hard."

THINK
"Think of your cognitive capacity as a cup. If your cup is already full and you try to pour more water into it, the water spills over. That spilled water represents the ideas, plans, and reasons that escape you. Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, many of us are operating under constant elevated stress that, in effect, pokes a hole in the cup, letting more water leak out. The irony of cog fog is that we often try to cope by doing even more. We address the problem in a way that worsens it, like trying to heal your chapped lips by licking them. What you actually need to do is the opposite."

Five ways to deal with cog fog

QUOTE TO REMEMBER

High self-esteem is not bad in and of itself. It’s clearly much better to feel worthy and valuable than worthless and insignificant. It’s just that there are both healthy and unhealthy pathways to high self-esteem.

Having a supportive family or working hard to achieve valued goals are healthy sources of high self-esteem. Puffing up your ego and putting other people down is not so great.
