Family Violence
16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism begins today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and ends on International Human Rights Day (10 December).

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence originated from a petition that was circulated during the 1991 United Nations World Conference on Human Rights.

This petition called on the conference committee to comprehensively address women’s human rights and recognise gender-based violence as a human rights issue.

Almost three decades on, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is a widely recognised global campaign that signifies action towards ending violence against women and girls around the world.

Click here to learn more about the 16 Days of Activism
Sexism and outdated ideas about gender contribute to a culture that allows violence against women. Together we can change this. When we call out sexist or disrespectful behaviours, we create a community where all women feel safe, equal, and supported.

Respect women – call it out.

Social Connections Program Helping People Socially Isolated in Ballarat Goldfields and Wimmera Grampians Communities

A middle-aged man, recently divorced, relocated to regional Victoria from Melbourne and was experiencing loneliness. The changes in his personal life, including the divorce and move, exacerbated feelings of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When referred to the Social Connections Program, funded by Western Victoria PHN, the gentleman mentioned his love of music. He entered the Social Connections Program seeking to join a local music group to help him follow his passion, reconnect with a lost hobby, and meet new and like-minded people.

Another individual, a retired elderly woman, also found an increased sense of connection and belonging following a referral into the Social Connections Program by a mental health clinician.

Staying COVIDSafe

Almost all restrictions have eased for fully vaccinated Victorians, but some COVID-19 risks still remain. There are things we can all do to make ourselves and others safer. As you live and work, remember these COVIDSafe principles:

  • We recommend wearing a mask if you can’t physically distance, have any symptoms, or if you are with people who may be vulnerable to COVID-19.
    • Masks are required indoors at retail, health, care and justice facilities, at primary schools, and on public transport/taxis/rideshare. See the Face masks page for information about where masks are required.
  • You can reduce risks by maintaining 1.5 metre distance from others where possible, using hand sanitiser and practising good hygiene.

Victoria Population Health Survey

The Victorian Population Health Survey was first undertaken in 2001 and is an important component of population health surveillance that provides an annual assessment of the health status and wellbeing of adults in Victoria. The information collected in the annual survey is used to inform to inform policymaking, planning, reporting, and evaluation by a wide range of stakeholders across Victoria.

In January 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic reached Australia, requiring a significant public health response to mitigate its spread and impact. In response, the annual Victorian Population Health Survey (VPHS) in 2020 was co-opted to provide critical information to inform the public health response.
