World Music Night with UT Ensembles

Three ensembles from the UT Butler School of Music present their final show of the semester. The Middle Eastern Ensemble (4–5 p.m.), the Hispanic Caribbean Ensemble (5:20–6:40), and the Conjunto Ensemble (7–8) take the stage outdoors at Central Market North, 4001 North Lamar for this free, all-ages concert.

Gloria González-López Receives Multiple Honors

Dr. Gloria González-López has received the Kathleen S. Lowney Mentoring Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the Simon-Gagnon Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association, Sexualities Section. Professor González-López also has been named C.B. Smith Sr. Centennial Chair in United States-Mexico Relations at UT Austin.







Mónica A. Jiménez Is Awarded Puerto Rican Writers Fellowship in Poetry

A new fellowship supporting Puerto Rican writers has been awarded to Dr. Mónica A. Jiménez, assistant professor of African and African Diaspora Studies at UT Austin. The Letras Boricuas Fellowship was created to identify, elevate, and amplify the voices of emerging and established Puerto Rican writers on the island and across the U.S. diaspora by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Flamboyan Foundation’s Arts Fund. Read more here.

Nathalia Hernández Ochoa Receives Dissertation Writing Fellowship for Spring 2022

Congratulations to doctoral candidate Nathalia Hernández Ochoa, who has received the UT Austin Dissertation Writing Fellowship for Spring 2022. Her project, titled “Curanderas: Maya Women Resisting Violence through Theater That Heals,” focuses on how Maya and Mestiza women are using theater and performance as a way to denounce violence in Guatemala. Dr. Adriana Linares Palma (LLILAS PhD, 2021) joined other experts to discuss the production of archaeological knowledge from academia and its relationship with the rights of Indigenous peoples in Guatemala. Read Linares's summary here.







 
Roberta Villalón Elected President of the SWS 

Dr. Roberta Villalón (LLILAS MA, 2004) has been elected president of Sociologists for Women in Society. Originally from Argentina, Villalón is a Fulbright scholar, professor, and chair of the Sociology and Anthropology Department at St. John's University, New York City. Learn about their SWS winter 2022 meeting “Rethinking Feminist Sociologies in the Era of Global Pandemics.”
