Why I Started Podcasting This Year

As we head toward the 50th episode of my travel podcast, Places I Remember with Lea Lane, I look back to almost a year ago when we were all unable to travel. Besides that, I had been sick in 2020 with Covid, Long Covid and breast cancer. What a tough year.

Feeling much better in January, I thought of an alternative way to travel — through memories of over 100 countries in 50 plus years. I’d start a podcast! I might be one of the oldest podcasters around, but that wouldn’t stop me. I figured my experiences and connections over the years are really a bonus. There’s so much to share!

So Places I Remember with Lea Lane was born in February, 2021. We’ve interviewed passionate travelers throughout the world, on topics from whale watching to RVs to Green Travel. And we’ve focused on destinations from Ireland to Antarctica. Our guests are authors, actors, TV personalities, tour operators, producers, CEOs and locals who talk about travel, where they live around the world, and offer their advice, stories, information, and memories.

Recording the episodes is the fun part. There’s full time work before and after: figuring topics, booking guests (with lots of back-and-forth communications with the guests and often their handlers), researching the topic and creating questions; and after recording, editing out the “ums” and “aahs,” then writing the show notes, and transcripts.

And then, the toughest part for me: marketing a new episode every week to social media, with the endless needs to feed the internet.

Because I also write five travel posts a month on forbes.com. I’m working full time! I’m not complaining. The reward is sharing travel experiences and those of other passionate travelers, entertaining and enlightening and maybe even inspiring listeners to get up and go. I’m privileged to be able to do it. At this time of my life, to do what you love is a great reward.

So I’m still traveling, just in a new way, shared with you every Tuesday all over the world. I hope you’ll follow the podcast on the app of your choice, or on my website, PlacesIRememberLeaLane.com. (And please consider giving a review on Apple if you like what you hear!)

Here’s to a joyous holiday season, maybe this year even traveling to see family and friends!

Great Holiday Gifts for Travel-Lovers
—And a Gift from Lea

Before the podcast, there were my books, including the most recent: the award- winning, illustrated travel memoir Places I Remember: Tales, Truths, Delights from 100 Countries. It’s available in soft cover, hard-cover, on Kindle. On Amazon and at bookstores.

And for those who prefer listening, I read the audio version, available on Audible and other audio platforms.

Do you have friends or family who love to travel? The book is a wonderful, illustrated gift for the holidays, especially for those who love traveling. And I’m offering signed bookplates. Just email me, let me know what you want me to write on the bookplate, and I’ll send it to your address so that you can paste the bookplate into the book (s).

Here’s a link to Amazon for print and audio versions.

A Favorite Travel Photo

I’m am amateur photographer, and I work with an iPhone. I took this photo of 13th century, Saint Chappelle in Paris, the former chapel of the king, in December, 2014. Concerts are held there throughout the holiday season.

what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”

Good News/Awards for the Books and Podcast

Thank you, Stephen and Leslie! Episode 20 of my podcast, Traveling, Jim Crow to Now: With Actor Stephen Bishop And His Mom,” just won a Silver at The Davey Awards. Now in its 17th year, this contest is judged on merit by a top panel. And the podcast as a whole also won a Silver!

Listen Notes tracks all podcasts, and rates them by downloads. Places I Remember has already been rated in the top 5% of podcasts, worldwide during our first year. Thank you to our listeners in over 1800 cities in 97 countries who have downloaded Places I Remember since mid-February, 2021.

It's been a busy year. I’ve been a guest on other podcasts, and this month was a guest speaker at the online Travel Symposium run by The Travel Connection. I also contribute, both for travel writing and for one episode a month of my podcast, on the popular women’s website, The Three Tomatoes.

TRAVEL FACT
Traveling can help improve problem-solving skills and overall brain health, and can also make you more creative and smart. Taking a vacation can also lower the risk of heart disease. After a day or two of being on vacation, studies show that most people feel less stressed.
