| | | Create Sheffield UpdateWhy Creativity Matters NOW |  | Thank you to all that came along to any of the 12 online conversations that took place during Why Creativity Matters NOW (WCMN), part of the Learn Sheffield Autumn Online Festival. What happened? Arts and cultural organisations and schools shared inspiring stories, case studies and ideas, whilst also discussing some of the challenges we face in using creativity in the classroom. There were themes covering SEND, diversity & inclusion, early years, the curriculum, active health and wellbeing, building community, drama & expressive arts, Sheffield Adventures, top tips and more. We are currently working with our Creative Education Producer(s) Jenny Coats, Amy Willoughby and Becky Stroud from Beck School, using the knowledge gained from WCMN, to help us plan our next steps and our offer to schools and Partners in 2022. Beverley supports children, adults and young people at all stages of their writing journeys through workshops, coaching, retreats and manuscript feedback. Read more. Creative DJ School < music technology > | Creative DJ school have completed a number of workshops during the year for Parkwood Academy, Handsworth Grange and Sheffield Music School. During these events the children have learnt innovative DJ techniques, collaborating as a team and working towards sample based compositions and routines. This has been both challenging and engaging for learners, expanding their creative thinking in new exciting ways. The workshops have received positive feedback from music teachers and students and we would like to expand into more schools in 21-22. Get in touch if you are interested. Link Learning < music technology, SEND >Link Learning is a team of teachers, musicians and artists that work with schools, children’s hospitals and community centres to deliver high-quality creative activities that encourage musical exploration, discovery and experimentation. DECSY < Global Learning, drama, P4C >DECSY exists to promote Global Learning: an approach to education that increases understanding of complex global issues, such as world poverty, conflict, climate change, racism and migration and thinking about how to create a better world. We work with teachers and many others involved in education with the aim to inspire and inform so that educators can confidently bring the global perspective into their teaching. Read more. Matthew Laurie < special needs training, community music >Matthew Laurie specialises in Community Music and Special Needs Training. Matthew devises and leads community music projects, collaborating with special schools to embed music and communication practice whilst also helping families to support children with special needs. Read more. Carmel Page < storytelling >Carmel is a freelance Storyteller, Artist in Education, Community Artist, Author & Creative Mentor. She has a wide breadth of experiences and skill, working with a plethora of organisations and settings across the city. Read more. Grimm & Co < writing, storytelling >Grimm & Co is a Yorkshire based literacy charity providing exciting writing workshops for children and young people, aged 7-18, unleashing imaginations through the joyful discovery of stories. The workshops they deliver cover lots of different types of writing, from comedy writing and stories, to poems, plays and monologues. These workshops are all free to the child and young person and encourages self-esteem, resilience, and self-belief, raising literacy levels and building confidence. Read more. Virtual School < children in care, creative curriculum >The Virtual School for Children Looked After (SCC) coordinates educational services for children in their care from 2 to 18 years old. They work in partnership with a child or young person’s school (or the education establishment at which they are registered) and social worker to ensure they are supported to fulfil their potential at all stages of their education. The Virtual School want to give them the best opportunity to be successful in their adult lives. Read more. | | Notice BoardChol |  | Chol are delighted to announce their latest Sheffield based project - Listen 52. LISTEN 52 is a youth leadership and arts engagement project in Sheffield, leading to an ambitious city centre performance in Summer 2022. 8 Young Producers (16-21yrs) will join Chol to discover children and young people’s hopes and fears about what their world will be like 30 years from now. The Listen 52 team will hit the road in Chol’s new mobile base, the Cholavan, creatively engaging hundreds of children and young people in their locality. The Young Producers will gather stories, recruit young performers, and build momentum towards their final event where audiences will witness large-scale projections, sound installations, and live performers sharing vital messages from the year 2052. Cool are currently recruiting 8 young people aged between 16 and 21 to become Young Producers on their paid internship. This internship is designed to provide experience and opportunities for anyone who might be interested in starting a career in the arts. You do not need to have any experience in delivering arts events or working professionally in the arts, just a willingness to get stuck in! Please book via this link. | | Carmel Page |  | My Role as a Henry Dancer Days Storyteller was written by our Partner Carmel Page about her experience as a Storyteller in Ward Six of the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where children and young people with cancer have complex treatments. “They are attached to chemotherapy pumps, feeding tubes, monitors, oxygen supplies, even if they had the energy to get out of bed they would struggle to get to the door. They can’t escape but I can go in.” Read her Story. | | Sheffield Museums | Book Sheffield Museum’s brand-new Ancient Egypt: A Mummy’s Story activity day. Children will consider how colonialism equipped the museums with the knowledge of lives in Ancient Egypt and think about how this makes them feel. This workshop uses enquiry-based learning to encourage children to connect and empathise with Djedma'atiuesankh through a combination of research, discussion and structured debate. | | Tell Tale Hearts |  | Tell Tale Heart’s Bluebird is taking flight, subject to ACE project funding, in June 2022. Inspired by Maeterlinck’s Bluebird, this show raises important philosophical questions for children in Key Stage 2 within a compelling, interactive quest adventure. What is the bluebird exactly and where could it be hiding? In the Land of Memory, the Future, the Land of Luxury or of Night? The audience need to discover their own answers helped by plenty of theatrical magic. Perfect to support children’s mental health awareness in the wake of the pandemic. Hannah is trained in Montessori education, where children are encouraged to enjoy “having a go” within a supportive environment. Hannah offers workshops in felting, metal embossing and clay, amongst others. Thank you, Hannah!” - Ruth (school teacher) June 2019. | | In Between the Trees |  | Over recent months one of our creative partners, Emily Whiteley at In-between the Trees has been developing and running the following courses which both involve practical workshop style approaches mainly outside; Supporting Autism & Neurodiversity in the Outdoors explores autism friendly pedagogy and showcases effective strategies such as sensory circuits and sensory stories. Don’t Panic: it’s a Climate Emergency includes participation in a variety of activities aiming to spark discussion around the climate crisis and facilitate creative ways to weave it into the curriculum, empowering young people without exacerbating eco anxiety. The courses can be bespoke to your requirements, from a 1 hour session to 2 days. She delivers inspirational, participatory workshops to all ages and abilities. Angie recently delivered a range of activities for the Healthy Activities and food project (HAF) working with children between the ages of 5 and 14. In her Story, Angie describes her work in the HAF sessions where she taught young people different ceramic techniques including imprinting and applying, to create their own individual personalised fish in the project named ‘Swim Against the Current’. The young people involved in the project learned that it’s ok to be different and to not follow the crowd. The project celebrates bravery, strength and courage. Promoting uniqueness, individually and difference. Swim Against the Current will be on display in the Winter Gardens from 6th Dec to 19th Dec 2021. Read the full story here. | | National Videogame Museum | NVM’s ambitious new project supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation will see them developing the game designers of the future. They are teaming up with the University of Sheffield’s School of Education and the Literacies Research Cluster to promote maker-led education. They’ll be supporting the MakerFutures programme to develop digital literacies in schools, libraries, and museums (like theirs!). With generous support from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, they will be undergoing a two-year research programme. This will see them working with schools and children, taking on the role of videogame designers and artists. Black Lives Still Matter - In this podcast Dr Nadena Doharty from the School of Education UoS talks to Head Teacher Dean Gordon about Lewisham's initiative to embed anti-racism across the entire London Borough. Dean is one of the UK's few Black Caribbean Head Teachers and is a member of the race steering group in Lewisham, setup to tackle racial inequality in the Borough’s education system.
