Language All Around with Ms. Catalian
Helping your child to enjoy reading is one of the most important things you can do as a parent and well worth the investment of your time and energy.

By far the most effective way to encourage your child to love books and reading is to read aloud to them, and the earlier you start, the better. Even a baby of a few months can see pictures, listen to your voice, and turn cardboard pages.

Make this time together a special time when you hold your kids and share the pleasure of a story without the distractions of TV or telephones. You may be surprised to find that a well-written children's book is often as big a delight to you as it is to the kids.

And don't stop taking the time to read aloud once your children have learned to read for themselves. At this stage, encourage them to read to you some of the time. This shared enjoyment will continue to strengthen your children's interest and appreciation. Here are some tips to get your child reading.

  • Create a small reading area in the house.
  • Keep books around your home.
  • Choose books your child will enjoy.
  • Introduce your child to audiobooks
  • Get Cooking! Have your child read the instructions  or ingredients

Be Mindful of Media Consumption

A Message from Carrie Craven, LMSW

Dixon Campus School Social Worker

Netflix’s popular show “Squid Game,” has garnered a lot of attention, and we are even hearing about it from students at school. It is my professional opinion that children should not watch Squid Game, or other violent media rated R or MA. Pediatricians and other experts on child well-being agree, this violent show is not for kids.

"Squid Game has repetitive extreme violence throughout, and other shows might just have one or two scenes," says Dr. Cowan. "Repetitive violence has been shown to lead to increased violence and aggression in children. Additionally, this content can be traumatic for some to watch, leading to increased anxiety." (Mayer, 2021, Parents.com).

Of course, this is not the only show out there that can have harmful effects on young children. In general, it is important to be aware of what kids are exposed to from TV and the internet. Consider using parental control features to block inappropriate content, and have conversations with your children about what makes content ‘okay’ for them or not. If they are feeling tempted to watch because 'other kids are,' use this as a teachable moment: there will be many times in life that one family's rules or expectations differ from another's, and that is okay. Many children won't even put up a fuss about a limit like this. For most kindergarten through second grade kiddos, the knowledge that this show or movie is likely to lead to bad dreams is enough to convince them to watch something else instead.

Message from Nurse Office
Greetings Parents,

We have had a busy few weeks. I should be getting results from the hearing screens soon and some of the vision screens were done this week. The company will be back to do the rest of the school.

Next Thursday, we will have Heath Heroes return to administer COVID vaccines to any student that has turned in a consent form. If you are still interested and have not turned in the consent form please do so as soon as possible. I have attached the link to the consent here.  If you do not want your child vaccinated, simply do not return the form.

Please prepare your child the night before to decrease their anxiety. Thank you all for preparing them so well for the flu shot. Everyone was very brave, I do not anticipate any problems with the vaccines. Any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out via email or phone.

Sincerely,
Kim Carbo RN

Health Heroes will be coming to ISL on Thursday, November 18th, 2021 to provide the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible students.

To have your child receive the COVID-19 vaccine here on campus, please complete and return the attached consent form by Friday, November 12th.

  • At this time, students 5 years of age and older are eligible to receive the Pfizer covid vaccine.

  • The second dose of the vaccine will be given on December 9th, 2021.

  • Printed copies of the form were sent with students. Families should have also received the form via email. If you have not already done so, email the form to your campus nurse no later than Friday, November 12.

  • As a reminder, students who have been fully vaccinated will not be required to quarantine if they are in close contact with a COVID-19 infected person. Please don’t hesitate to contact your Campus nurse with any questions.
