Hi <<First Name>>,
This week, I had the opportunity to visit Vancouver Community College with my good friend, PS Technology and Innovation, Brenda Bailey, to meet with apprentices and celebrate Apprenticeship Recognition Month.
Thank you to those who have chosen to be in the trades and thank you for your contributions to the province and economy.
I also want to recognize the work that Parliamentary Secretary for Skills Training Andrew Mercier is doing in putting value back into our trades workers.

Students across the province will have the opportunity to learn the latest techniques with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, preparing them for their future careers.
There are wonderful benefits to a career in the trades and Apprenticeship Recognition Month is an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of apprentices, employer sponsors, youth participants and foundation students across B.C.
Our government values the tradespeople who are contributing to B.C.’s economic recovery. They are building our homes, fixing our cars and creating modern solutions. We are committed to creating opportunities for women, Indigenous Peoples and other under-represented groups to find good-paying, long-lasting careers in the trades.

Building a stronger workforce in B.C.
This week we announced an investment of $3 million for technology and trades equipment upgrades at 20 public post-secondary institutions across the province. This funding will help institutions replace obsolete equipment with modern technology to fit the programs they offer, whether it is an air compressor for welding, a robotics kits for engineering, or a dough sheeter and mixer for pastry arts.
Tech and skilled trades jobs offer interesting and rewarding career opportunities for workers, and contribute to B.C.’s economy in a big way - and they are in high demand in B.C. According to the 2019 Labour Market Outlook, 75,000 tech-related job openings, such as computer programmers, engineers and software designers, are expected in the 10-year period from 2019-29. In the trades, approximately 73,000 job openings are expected during the same time in occupations such as millwrighting, carpentry, construction and heavy-duty machinery.
We are improving access to training and education, and supporting the sector with more home-grown talent. Every year, B.C. invests $99 million a year in trades education through the Industry Training Authority, and this year alone, they expect to fund more than 27,000 apprenticeship and foundation training seats. Our government is also funding 2900 more tech spaces at post-secondary institutions by 2023.
We’ve seen a steady increase in the number of people entering tech and skilled trades professions in B.C. and we continue to encourage more people to consider this career path. This includes creating more opportunities for women and Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour to enter the trades.
Every day, we are building a stronger workforce in B.C. and working towards an economic recovery that will make life better for all British Columbians.
