Dear <<First Name>>,

Tuesday, November 16, 2021
The first Model UN session at Webster University is this Saturday!
Sign up NOW! Resolutions due tomorrow!

Session A resolutions are due tomorrow, November 17, by midnight. Please send them to Stephanie (gavinstephanie89@gmail.com) in or attached to an email OR share a Google doc with her. Resolutions must go to FedEx for printing early Thursday morning so we have copies for all delegates in time for this Saturday's session. Resolutions will be updated on our website as we receive them for delegates to read in advance. Click here to read those already submitted for Session A this Saturday.

What should schools and students be doing for Model UN preparation?
  • SESSION A (Nov. 20) DELEGATES SHOULD SIGNUP NOW!!  Once students know their countries, they need to sign up for their Model UN session (A, C, or D) on the Civitas Google Form. Click here to sign up.
  • All delegates should continue country research.
  • Schedule a visit from Stephanie to your group or club to answer questions and review the delegate handbook. This is optional, but very helpful.
  • Write a resolution on an issue that concerns you, using the helpful resources and samples on our website. Writing a resolution is also optional, but we do like to have at least one per school submitted.
  • Submit final resolutions (via email) NO LATER THAN the Wednesday evening before your MUN session. We must have time to put all resolutions together for final printing to provide at the MUN session.
  • Attend your Session! Dress code is business casual. Arrive at least 15 minutes early to check -in and get settled.
Resolutions due by TOMORROW, Wed., Nov. 17 for Model UN Session A (9:00 am-12:00 pm) on Saturday, November 20 at Browning Auditorium on the Webster University campus (same location as country draft).

A great presentation followed by a dynamic discussion last Saturday!

Santi Lugo, senior at Parkway West High School, did a fantastic job giving his presentation on racial discrimination to students from a variety of high schools this past Saturday morning. A frank and eye-opening discussion followed, including a sharing of current assignments being taught in a variety of different classes and how inclusive or not those assignments seem to be. Students also weighed in on the educational debate happening in Missouri and throughout the country about what should and should not be taught to high school students. The fun morning ended with a sharing of Civitas swag from the office closet!

FREE copies of the New York Times Magazine's The 1619 Project available!

Before COVID rocked our lives and shut down the world, Civitas had a very exciting event planned in early April of 2020. Nikole Hannah-Jones, arranged by The Pulitzer Center (their website), was scheduled to come to St. Louis and speak to hundreds of area high school students at University City high school. In preparation for her visit, The Pulitzer Center had copies of The 1619 Project delivered to the Civitas office for all students attending. Many of the copies were delivered to area schools before the event was canceled, but many boxes still remain in our office.

If you would like a class set, please contact Civitas at info@civitas-stl.com and we can arrange to deliver them to your school.

Mark your calendar for a Human Rights event on Thursday, Dec. 9th

International Human Rights Day is every year on December 10, with a different annual theme. This year's theme is EQUALITY.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home--so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world...Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world."

Local St. Louis citizens are encouraged to take action for human rights this year! Area non-profits, including The Organization for Black Struggle (click here for their website) and the United Nations Association of St. Louis, are working together for a celebration and presentation of Human Rights, open to all at the St. Louis Public Library Schlafly Branch at 225 N. Euclid Avenue at 5:30 pm on Thursday, December 9.

Civitas will pass on more information when it's available.
