Dear Friends of Fordham Sailing,
Day one of ICSA Match Race Nationals is in the books. As promised, this is certainly the most competitive field this event has ever seen. Competitors arrived this morning to a very light breeze and the harbor start was delayed to allow the breeze to fill. By the time we got out to the race course, the wind had filled to a moderately patchy 4-6 knots. The Rams started strong, winning two of their first three races. A storm passed through the course during our 3rd race and swung the breeze 90 degrees to the right, causing a brief delay while the race committee reconfigured the course. The new breeze direction started light but slowly filled into a crisp and shifty 8-12 knots where it remained for the rest of the day. Though the Rams were fast all day, they struggled to get off the starting line and we lost three tough races to close out the day. The Rams finished the day at 2-4 and are currently in a tie for 7th place, though the standings are tight on both sides.
Unfortunately, due to the delays we saw throughout the day and the earlier sunset due to the time change, only 8 of the 12 flights in the round robin series were completed. As such, we are now under a time crunch to complete the desired format. Depending how long it takes to complete the round robin tomorrow, there may only be time to move directly to a final four knockout, removing the quarterfinals round and thereby removing four teams from contention to win. Report time has been pushed up one hour tomorrow morning in an effort to maximize racing but we are limited by the 3:00 P.M. cutoff time. We are hopeful that the breeze will cooperate and we will get an opportunity to compete in the final knockout round.
Results are updated from all races sailed today and will continue to be posted through the day tomorrow at the link below.
