Adult Improvers Toast their season
14 November 2021

Dear WKC,

Throughout the year we have welcomed numerous new members of all ages, joining after courses, taster sessions or experience paddler routes.  Learn about the Adult Improvers,  a social group of paddlers who regularly meet on a Saturday as well as midweek to develop skills, support one another and enjoy the water.

Great too, to see so many join in the land based winter training throughout the week, whether that's swimming, circuits or paddle machines.  Details of the various sessions are available on TeamApp (documents section), any questions ask your Group Lead. All the hard work over winter can make a real difference to your next season.

There is still plenty of on the water activity, some of our junior members and coaches ventured up to Nottingham for the Junior Development Squad training day where they had the opportunity to paddle in K4's with different juniors for other clubs. Crew-boats continued on the Sunday as several members took part in the 10k K2 series in Elmbridge

Next week will be very busy at the club.  On Saturday, 20th November, it is Club River & Clean Up, where we turn our attention to the River and our Compound, all members are welcome.  Details of the day and what maybe useful to bring are below. Don't forget you can also sign up to help on the next Pennywort Action Day on the 27th November

The next day, is the rescheduled Hare & Hounds (& Dash Hounds).  Don't forget to preregister if you haven't paddled the course before as well as email club chairman Jim, chairman@weykayak.co.uk to see how you could Get Involved helping one of our flagship events run smoothly and safely.

Winter circuits have restarted on Tuesday and Thursday Night at 6pm in the gym. Speak to Paul Dimmock for more information and to get involved. Likewise, paddle machines are moving out of storage for more regular use. A reminder to please look after them and wipe them down after use. This also applies to gym equipment. Please use the sprays and towels provided.

As we are spending more time training indoors, we would like to request that ALL members are regularly taking a lateral flow test to ensure the safety of all users of the Waterside Centre. As well as wipe down the equipment after use with the sprays and towels provided.

As always continue to pass anything onto us, no matter how small, to comms@weykayak.co.uk as early as possible so it does not miss the newsletter going out. We have set up a club wide Instagram account this week, please see the link to it below.

Enjoy the water!

Adult Improvers toast their season

The Adult Improvers is a growing group of circa 35 like minded paddlers, many fresh from beginners courses looking to develop their water skills and speed. With the darker nights, the group took the opportunity to toast the end of the summer evening water sessions and enjoy good company without the threat of a swim.

Huge thanks to Charlie Lovett who coordinates the host of coaches and PAAs to take the groups out, and special mention to Richard Perkins for leading the ever increasingly popular Saturday afternoon and mid-week sessions. Thanks too, to all the coaches and PAA's.

Now for the winter training - it’s fab you’ll love it!

Nottingham Junior Development Squad Day

An early start saw a group of Wey juniors head up to Holmepierre Point for the latest Junior Development Squad (JDS) training day.  This session was focussed on crew boat skills and saw the juniors mixed within k4s, learning new skill drills and the importance of communication.  There were also talks from current podium targeting athletes, regarding balancing training, social life and academics.

The conditions were classic Nottingham, with a strong head wind, waves and ducks.  Our juniors did us proud, working well with their crews over the two water sessions, taking on board feedback and getting the boats to run quickly and efficiently.

The JDS days are a collaboration between the Marathon Racing committee (MRC), Sprint Racing Committee (SRC)  and British Canoeing’s Talent Department. Key an eye on the newsletter and social media for up coming events.

These are events are for paddlers of the following minimum standards:
Girls –
U16s – Girls C and/or Div 5 marathon or above
U19s – Div 4 marathon or above
Boys –
U16s – Boys C and/or Div 4 marathon or above
U19s – Div 3 marathon or above

Coaches
The JDS is also aimed at those seeking to develop their knowledge and engage with other like-minded coaches.  You do not need to have a paddler attending the events – just come along with a desire to learn, engage and share ideas.

Huge thanks to all all involved in organising these events, including our own Holly Mobbs.

Reminder: WKC Paddler Safety Code

Safety of our members and of others is paramount.  Accordingly, the club has developed the Wey Paddler Safety Code to clearly articulate the restrictions that are be placed on members paddling in different conditions and at different times of the day.

It is important to note that every member must make their own dynamic assessment before each paddle considering elements such as the conditions, buoyancy requirements, planned route, paddling competency, safety equipment and appropriate clothing.  When necessary consult someone else.  Every individual will be paddling at their own risk and responsible for themselves.

Though the Wey Navigation is normally a calm and safe waterway, conditions can change rapidly and the Guildford area is subject to flooding.

When the river is in flood the National Trust indicates that the navigation is closed by placing a RED BOARD in the frame on the Clubhouse wall. The RED BOARD is controlled by the National Trust and no Club member may remove it or ignore it. Under most conditions this indicates that no crews are allowed to paddle.

However, there are times when the river is in flood and the RED BOARD is displayed, but conditions are not bad enough to pose an unacceptable level of risk to experienced paddlers. The YELLOW BOARD procedures have been developed with the National Trust to allow paddling to take place under careful control of Club Coaches. The Club controls the YELLOW BOARDS.

A river flow gauge is situated in the rear hallway, if flow is greater than 30 m/s, there must be NO PADDLING.  You can check before you travel to the club here

If the system is abused the Club may lose this concession from the National Trust and, if we damage a boat whilst paddling in flood conditions, it is unlikely the Club insurance company will pay.

Further winter paddling advice can be found on the British Canoeing website

Get Involved!

Club night, or Saturday bacon butties would not be possible without our amazing volunteers.  We desperately need volunteers for Saturday kitchen, if you could help out, get in contact with chairman@weykayak.co.uk
It is a great way to contribute back to the club, whilst getting to know more members (in a dry and warm setting!)

Massive shout out to some of volunteers from this week as well as those who regularly get involved by completing the washing up at the end of club night.

You can volunteer to help with Thursday club night via Teamapp. Go to the event's section, find a Thursday Club Night event and click on the duty roster to see if the roles have been filled yet. Even if you can only do one club night a year, it still helps!
