This week's syllabus is Not Here to Make Friends by Lindsey Lee Eichenberger.
What explains the enduring appeal of reality TV? For Lindsey, it goes far deeper than the drama and hijinks. Perhaps we return to so-called trash television not to favorably compare ourselves to the spectacle on screen, but rather because we recognize ourselves within the chaos. Guided by this hypothesis, the syllabus explores how concepts like race, class, celebrity, and mental health are metabolized through reality TV. Shows we rely on for escapism may be closer to home than we thought.
