We’re delighted to announce the publication of Export Market Opportunities, a report that highlights international opportunities for New Zealand educational publishers. The report was commissioned with funding from Education New Zealand’s Future Focus Programme and was prepared by Emma House from Oreham Group UK. You can find the report here.

The document provides an overview of global educational publishing markets, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the international education sector and identifies where the opportunities for our local publishers lie.

This report will complement other strands of our international programme targeted at supporting education publishers, including the online hub that we’re currently working on.

Once again thanks to the team at Education New Zealand for their support of our educational members through the Future Focus Programme.

We’ll run through the voting process on the night so just be ready to click on your favourite book.

We’re disappointed that we’re unable to deliver a full Book Design Workshop this year, but we hope that you’ll join us on Zoom for a discussion with our judges on Friday (19 November) at 1pm. Our fantastic judging team will dive into this year’s entries, analyse the shortlist and highlight what it was about the winners that nudged them into the top spots. This is a free event, and to register please click here.

As a reminder, this year’s judges are convened by Simon Waterfield, a designer at Lift Education with expertise in educational and literacy design and children’s publishing. Simon is supported by a stellar judging team made up of James Goggin, co-founder of design practice Practise, graphic designer and educator Fay McAlpine and award winning cartoonist and illustrator Ant Sang.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors who generously support the Book Design Awards as well as all the publishers and designers who submit their work for consideration. We had a fantastic response to the awards this year, and despite the fact that we have to celebrate online it’s been wonderful to see the many beautiful books being published in Aotearoa.

Learning material which feels relevant to students’ own lives and which they find recognisable, is essential for this,” says Edify Publisher Adrian Keane. In his Creative Rights = Creative Reads story Adrian talks about seeing the need for a personal finance resource aimed at high school students, working with author, teacher and subject matter expert John Duston and why “the entire learning sector benefits from respecting copyright”. Read Adrian’s story.

Reader perspectives on the importance of books by New Zealand authors are also front and centre in this new set of stories. Perspectives from young Hooked on NZ Book reviewers run alongside a story from reader, former bookseller and Read NZ Te Pou Muramura CE Juliet Blyth. Juliet talks about the ways in which reading is a ‘super power,’ why books written in and about New Zealand are so important for us and why she’s been reading even more New Zealand books of late. Read Juliet’s story.

Read Hooked on NZ Book reviewers Natalya Newman; Eleanor Bassett; Ashika Hira; and Savarna Yang’s stories.

Sonya Wilson, the brains behind Kiwi Christmas Books, the project that collects donations of brand new, New Zealand books and delivers them to children in need at Christmas also has a story up on the site. Two Te Papa Press books win prestigious Whitley Awards

The first ever book to examine the ornithology of the subantarctic Auckland Islands, and an illustrated children’s book that dives into the mysterious world of Te Papa’s most popular science exhibit, have won Te Papa Press authors and their collaborators accolades from the prestigious Whitley Awards for zoological literature.

Presented annually by the Royal Zoological Society of NSW, the Whitley Awards recognise excellence in publications profiling the unique wildlife of the Australasian region. Because of Covid-19, the awards, which celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2021, could not be presented in-person this year and so the announcement was made this week via the Society’s website and social media.

 INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Day of the Imprisoned Writer 2021

Acclaimed authors Roberto Saviano, Philippe Sands, Ben Okri, and Yassin al-Haj Saleh are among those supporting PEN International’s Day of the Imprisoned Writer campaign in 2021, with solidarity letters addressed to 12 Eritrean writers imprisoned since 2001, imprisoned writer and politician Selahattin Demirtaş, imprisoned academic Rahile Dawut, and imprisoned writer, academic and lawyer Mohammed Al-Roken, respectively.

Every year on 15 November PEN launches its Day of the Imprisoned Writer campaign, highlighting five cases of writers who are imprisoned or facing prosecution, and calling for urgent international action to release and protect them. These cases are emblematic of the type of threats and attacks writers and journalists around the world are often subjected to, for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression.

This year, on the 40th anniversary of the campaign, PEN is featuring the cases of Maykel Osorbo (Cuba), Selahattin Demirtaş (Turkey), Rahile Dawut (China - Xinjiang), Mohammed Al-Roken (UAE), and the collective case of 12 writers imprisoned incommunicado since 2001 (Eritrea).

How does the Day of the Imprisoned Writer work?
The Day of the Imprisoned Writer is an opportunity for the PEN’s movement to take action on behalf of selected writers and ensure that they and their families feel supported and not forgotten.

PEN Centres and members worldwide advocate for these cases, with activities ranging from letter-writing and panel discussions, to press conferences and publishing the work of imprisoned writers. PEN’s supporters engage in activities such as raising awareness of their situation and taking action on social media, or in the form of donations. Writers send solidarity letters to their colleagues in prison or under threat.

Find out more about getting involved in the week long schedule of activities here.

Shanghai Children's Book Fair postponed

The Bookseller reports:

The Shanghai International Children's Book Fair (CCBF) has been postponed from this month to March 2022 because of the situation with Covid-19 in China and will now coincide with the Bologna Children's Book Fair (BCBF).

A statement from the CCBF organising committee apologised for the "inconvenience this unavoidable postponement may cause" but said the team were "convinced that the new situation will bring exciting opportunities so as to create a good exhibition and a fruitful business environment for all participants".
