Dear Explorer Families,
Our boys’ volleyball team are tied for 3rd place with Corner Lake and Legacy Middle Schools. They will play on Tuesday, Nov. 30th at 5:30 p.m. at home to determine placement in the playoffs. Let’s support our team and wish them success.  Go Discovery!

We enjoyed Mr. Jeffrey Baker’s presentation during Teach-In.  He spoke to students about technology in the business world with a focus around data, databases and tools used to visualize data to enable rapid decision making and staying in tune with key performance indicators.

Progress Reports for this marking period can be viewed via Family Access.  To request a hard copy, please call or send a note to the main office.

Our next PTSA meeting will take place on Thursday, Dec. 2nd in the Media Center at 4:30 p.m.

Picture retakes will also take place on Thursday, December 2nd. Student pictures have arrived and were distributed to students via their history teacher.

I want to wish our Discovery Community a restful and safe Thanksgiving break and look forward seeing all Explorers back on campus on Monday 29th.

Thank you for your continued support of Discovery Middle where we “Prevail in Excellence”.

Sincerely,
Dr. Fernández
Principal

Thank you to Timber Creek High School's Air Force JROTC for visiting our 8th graders Thursday during their US History classes. They had a wonderful time learning about the program and meeting some of the group's members. They gave a fantastic presentation.
Art students worked collaboratively on rain barrels and construction of window murals for two to three weeks. The emphasis was on water conservation and environmentalism.  The student artists incorporated warm and cool colors in their creations. The artists sketched mixed colors and painted the art. I was very proud of the students working together to conceptualize large-scale projects. Below is a link to their work.

In case you were not able to make it out to the Maitland Art Festival last weekend, here is a little recap video of the artworks that were chosen to go on display. DMS students did an amazing job- this is artwork from Art 1, Art 2, Art 3, and Digital Art!

A brand new online tutoring program is starting up. OLET, is On-Line tutoring with live teachers. It is available Monday – Thursday from 5 to 9 pm. All students have a canvas course for OLET on their existing dashboard. All they have to do is open the class, go to the schedule, and select the Teams meeting by date and time.  Once they have accessed the meeting they will have a teacher to help them with questions or with homework. We encourage your child to check out this great new service.
Although both teams lost this week, our boys team is in a three-way tie for 3rd place. There will be a cluster playoff game on Tuesday, November 30 at 5:30 PM here at Discovery to see who will go on in the playoffs. Save the date and come out to see the game and support our Explorers. Go Discovery!

The next PTSA meeting is on December 2nd @ 4:30 pm in the Media Center.
Parent Teacher Student Associations (PTSAs) provide youth members with the opportunity to make a difference by developing leadership skills, learning about the legislative process, increasing their self-esteem, and contributing to the school and community. In turn, adult PTSA members gain a new perspective for program development and youth leadership development and acquire a better understanding of the youth of today.
Joining PTSA does not mean you need to volunteer your time, certainly, if you have time we would love to have you volunteer. Joining PTSA is giving you and your student a voice and the ability to participate and help with student and teacher initiatives throughout the 2021-2022 school year. We would love for everyone to become a member and be an advocate for our students. Hope to see you on Thursday!

The School Advisory Council is a representative body of teachers, students, parents, support personnel, and community members who assist with the preparation and evaluation of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and decide how school improvement funds will be spent. The SAC helps the school achieve its goals and increase student learning through the School Improvement process. It is important that we remain consistent in adhering to guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
  • Face coverings are meant to protect other people in case the wearer is unknowingly infected but does not have symptoms.
  • Physical distancing also called “social distancing,” means keeping a safe space between yourself and other people who are not from your household.
  • Physical distancing combined with mask-wearing can help slow the spread of COVID-19.
  • Encourage alternate means of greeting expressions to assist with physical distancing and maintain separation (i.e. minimize gestures that promote close contact, discourage shaking hands, fist or elbow bumps, and hugging. Instead wave and verbally greet them.)
  • Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. After you have been in a public place and touched an item or surface that may be frequently touched by other people, such as door handles, tables, countertops, chairs, sinks, shared pens, elevator buttons, and microphones. Always wash or sanitize your hands before touching your eyes, nose, or mouth because that’s how germs enter our bodies.
  • Health monitoring and recognizing the signs and symptoms are crucial to help reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19.
  • People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
For more information, please review the COVID-19 Health and Safety Procedures Manual on the OCPS website.
