When I'm shooting a story it's often of people with a job to do, which means they can’t afford to be distracted. So I’ve become skilled at keeping out of the way, something that came in handy with a story I covered in Howard, CO.
Elaborate setups were not going to fly. So for the portraits I readied one light, waited for a down moment—such as when the tractor driver was waiting for motor oil—then ran my gear in, directed, clicked, and let them get back to work.
For me, “getting the shot” has little to do with camera equipment. It has more to do with vision, but even more to do with preparation, the ability to think and work fast, and balancing being polite and respectful while still working hard to get what you need. See more images from this story here.
As I plan for the new year, I'm looking forward to putting my project list together and I'd love to connect with you. Please see my Calendly page to choose a time that works for you.
