SPOTLIGHT ON...
Kelly Ireland
Kelly Ireland, Alaska INBRE funded Graduate Research Assistant (GRA), is in the spotlight this week. Kelly works in the lab of Dr. Brandon Briggs. She grew up on a cattle ranch in Southern Oregon, and currently lives at an Iditarod sled dog kennel with over 50 dogs! In her free time, enjoys being outside doing any number of activities. Jynene Black, Alaska INBRE Reporting and Outreach Coordinator, recently interviewed Kelly.
INBRE: When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?
I didn't know I wanted to be a scientist for a long time. I started my undergraduate studies as a journalism major. I took sciences classes for fun. I never thought about being a scientist until one of my professors asked me why I wasn't pursuing biology. Once they asked, I started questioning my career decisions and decided to double major in biology and journalism. Ultimately, I decided biology was the path I wanted to go because I was more excited about doing stuff in the lab that I ever was writing.
INBRE: What is your current research?
I am currently researching how crude oil impacts threespine stickleback fish and how the microbiome of the fish may harm or help fish following exposure to oil. I'm really interested in this field of study because I want to protect the natural environment, and fish/fishing has always been a big part of my life. I also would love to live in Alaska for the rest of my life. I know that the oil and fishery industries are an important part of the state's economy, so joining the two in my research seemed like a way to guarantee employment post-graduation.
