Methane Expert Sees Opportunity For Cattle Industry

On October 25th, the Nebraska Beef Council hosted Dr. Frank Mitloehner, Professor & Cooperative Extension Specialist in the Department of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis for a seminar on beef's environmental impact. Dr. Mitloehner presented to a group of influencers including dietitians, food purveyors, educators and beef producers, explaining how beef's methane contributions affect the environment compared to other green house gasses like Carbon Dioxide. According to Mitloehner, Carbon Dioxide remains in the atmosphere trapping heat from the sun for about 1,000 years, Nitrous oxide lasts about 110 years and Methane, which cattle produce, only remains in the atmosphere for about 12 years.

Dr. Mitloehner went on to discuss some of the technology being used within the beef and dairy industry that has helped California producers reduce their methane emissions by about 25%.

After the seminar, when the attendees were polled about their experience, 100%  said the session increased their confidence in discussing livestock emissions and environmental impact. Some of the most impactful gleanings were the shorter methane lifecycle (compared to CO2), how soil, forages and cattle all positively impact methane and CO2 capture/sequestration and how livestock have a much smaller impact on emissions than other sources like energy and transportation.

This update is designed to inform Nebraska's producer leaders about Beef Checkoff activities in our state. Please forward or share this information with your neighbors at local meetings, auctions or the coffee shop!
