Kavitha Reddy, M.D., FACEP, ABOIM serves as the principle investigator on the Veteran's Administration study, wHOPE. Dr. Reddy will present early outcomes of the study and provide practical tips for leading a culture of wellness that includes health and wellness coaching for employees' health and resiliency.

Dr. Reddy is Associate Director of Employee Whole Health, Veteran’s Health Administration Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation; an emergency medicine and integrative medicine physician at Veterans Administration St. Louis Healthcare System in Missouri; and assistant professor in emergency medicine at Washington University School of Medicine.

Integrative Health Equity: From Patients to Policy

Join us to explore the role that social and structural determinants play in the ability of individuals and communities to stay healthy, especially, in marginalized and under-resourced communities. In this presentation, you will learn how a federally qualified health center in Texas takes a multilevel approach to help advance health equity:  (1) using a relational, whole person, interprofessional model with patients in clinic; (2) helping connect patients to resources that address unmet individual needs such as food, transportation, and housing; and (3) advocating for policy changes that impact community health.

Dr. Sharad Kohli is a family physician who has dedicated his career to advancing health equity. He spent two decades working with Federally Qualified Health Centers in urban and rural settings in California and Texas. He currently is the Medical Director of the Integrative Pain Management Program at People’s Community Clinic, an FQHC in Austin, Texas.

Keegan Warren-Clem, J.D., LL.M. is a Practice Area Manager at Texas Legal Services Center, managing the Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLP) department and overseeing Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault, Crime Victims program and Veteran Legal Assistance programs. She works collaboratively with health care providers to improve outcomes by bringing patient-centered legal and structural expertise into the delivery of health care.

Whitman Honored for Teaching Excellence

Susan Whitman, a lecturer in the UVM integrative health program, received the 2021 Prelock Online Teaching Award for the course HLTH 101: Intro to Integrative Health. The award recognizes Whitman's superior organization skills and creative, fun teaching style that engages and inspirs.

Students and faculty reviewing nominations noted Whitman's clear learning objectives, creative content, varied assignments and use of technology: "Module content contained many thoughtfully selected accompanying images and more short custom video clips illustrating key concepts. ... correspondence in the YellowDig discussion board was timely and qualitatively rich. ... Susan sets the standard for teaching students online. She is interested in my learning, not my grade."

Intro to Integrative Health provides an overview of the social forces prompting the rise of integrative health care in the U.S. Students explore cultural and institutional processes shaping substance abuse and health care delivery. Whitman also teaches courses on integrative health and wellness coaching and leads the Open Source Wellness group coaching program for UVM employees.

Community as Medicine: Group Health & Wellness Coaching

UVM Integrative Health offers group health & wellness coaching for employees of UVM and UVM Medical Center. Based on the Open Source Wellness model, the coaching program aims to be the behavioral equivalent of a pharmacy for behaviors that drive human health and wellbeing: physical activity, nutritious food, stress reduction and social support. Participants work together, under the guidance of an integrative health and wellness coach, to create sustained changes in their physical, psychological and social wellbeing.

We are collecting data on health outcomes to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of this program. The data will be valuable in designing and implementing effective worksite health and wellness programming for employees in university and hospital settings.
