International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Dear members,
Our network for women’s and gender museums is strongly committed to advocating for women’s rights, and the 25th November is an International Day we find most important to support. Activists have marked the day since 1981, in memory of the three sisters Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa Mirabal who was brutally murdered in the Dominican Republic on the 25th November 1960, and the UN established the 25th November as an International Day in 1999.
This year IAWM will support the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women both in our Newsletter, on our website, and in a Social Media campaign. We hope all members will join us in spreading the campaign.
In this newsletter, we are sharing some wonderful projects from our community, particularly related to the theme 'Against Violence Against Women'. We think you will find them interesting and inspirational.

From Hittisau, Austria:
 At the AK Feldkirch (Arbeiterkammer), 25th of November 2021 - 10th of December 2021, The Red Line, A travelling exhibition, part of the "16 Days Opposing Violence Against Women". Cooperation between the ifs Women's Counselling Centre for Sexual Violence and the Frauen Museum, Hittisau (Women's Museum Hittisau) Sexualised violence against women and girls has many faces - from misogynistic slogans, verbal harassment, suggestive looks, and discrimination on the basis of belonging to the female sex, through to forced sexual acts. This form of violence continues to be a massive problem in Europe. Every 3rd woman experiences some form of sexual harassment after the age of 15 and every 5th woman experiences physical and/or sexual violence.
During the course of the "16 Days Opposing Violence Against Women", we are focusing on sexualised violence together with the ifs Women's Counselling Centre. Around November 25th (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and December 10th (International Human Rights Day), an exhibition will be displayed in the foyer of the Vorarlberg Arbeiterkammer in Feldkirch. The aim is to raise awareness of the issue of "sexualised violence", to counteract the taboos, stigmatisation, and silencing of women, to show alternative approaches and strategies against it.

From Glasgow, Scotland:
 Consciously Rising Exhibition
Glasgow Women's Library
20th November 2021 - 5th February 2022
An exhibition of new prints created collaboratively and individually by a group of women who met regularly online during lockdown. The group used feminist consciousness-raising to facilitate discussions and each member drew on their own experience. This shared space became a starting point for making these creative works on paper together. Group members have used printmaking to bring personal experiences into creative works, connecting the personal with the political.

From Bonn, Germany:
 The Frauenmuseum Bonn plans to convert one floor into an information pool on two topics:
1. Reports on female refugees. On this occasion, an installation by Helen Escobedo "Train of Refugee Women" will be set up.
2. The current situation of women and girls in Afghanistan after the Taliban came to power.
For the annual day of remembrance of women affected by violence, the courtyard of the Women's Museum will be illuminated in orange light.

In her recently published book Es geht nur gemeinsam! Wie wir endlich Geschlechtergerechtigkeit erreichen she addresses the structural misery women are faced with these days and claims: Women are going to live a horrendous “Re-Traditionalisation”! Femicides are real, dangerous and deadly. And the number is growing. Effective actions of prevention are still rare.  inVisible Women
A five-year review of this campaign for gender equality in UK civic statues has revealed a TENFOLD increase in the number of statues since the launch of the site; 0.6 per year from 1882 up to 2016 and 6 per year from 2016 to 2021.
This growing network of active campaigns will shortly have a presence on the site under - of course - VISIBLEWomen.
