     Parish of the Transfiguration

         News:  November 17, 2021

This is the final Sunday of our church year; known as either Christ the King or Reign of Christ Sunday

It is the last service in the season of Pentecost, the last service before we begin a new church year and an exciting Advent journey.

In a world where power and authority are frequently misused, we as Christians are called to follow a higher power, an authority of love and truth unlike those "of the world".  Often it seems we continue to try and make compromises between the two, but we know deep in our hearts if we are still enough to listen, that the kingdom of God is where we want to live and work and enjoy life together.  May it be so!

A PRAYER FOR REIGN OF CHRIST SUNDAY

Holy One, your kingdom is not of this world.

It is not a nation or a place.
It is a state of being.
It is a Way.
It is a commitment to live in and view the world
through relationships based on truth,
not on power and might.

It is a way of love and peace -
where all are safe to be who they were created to be;
to share their stories and express their fears;
to reveal their uncertainties and envision their dreams;
where all are welcome, and all belong.
'Your kingdom come' we pray -
yearning for the arrival of the time when earthly authority
no longer suppresses or oppresses;
where status and privilege are no longer superior;
where suffering is alleviated, and needs are fulfilled -
through our concern for and connections with one another;
where wholeness and healing go hand in hand with truth.
We pray in the name of Christ the King.
"The One"
who demonstrated power through weakness;
who manifested strength through vulnerability;
who established justice through mercy;
and who built the kingdom of God
by embracing a chaotic and violent world -
taking its pain into his own body,
dying the death it sought,
and rising again;
to remind us that
light is stronger than darkness;
love is stronger than hate;
and that with God, all good things are possible."
Amen.

Death of a Christian...
The present parish study series is titled The Death of a Christian: Death and Dying in the Life of the Church.  We are learning about the ministry of the Church at the time of death, as well as hearing from the experts among us about the care provided by funeral homes. We also share our experiences of things like pastoral visits, hospice care, etc. We hear from one another what has helped, what did not help, and what we wished for, and what we hope for. Most of all it is a time when we can speak openly about these important things which can be hard to talk about, how we have experienced God's grace in times of death, and find healing in our shared faith and love.
The series runs Monday nights at 7 pm from until November 22.

***
Parish council will meet on Thursday, November 18, at 7 pm via Zoom. Parish council members can use the Parish Zoom link found in the weekly newsletter to join.

✨  TODAY'S QUOTE  ✨

" A leader takes people where they want to go.
A great leader takes people where they don't necessarily want to go,
but ought to be."

The circle goes round and round again. As one year ends, we prepare for another to begin, offering this prayer....
Reign in our hearts, O God, and shape us as your people this very day!

And all the people said, "Amen!"
