ELIXIR NEWS

The 8th ELIXIR All Hands meeting will take place 7 - 10 June 2022 in Amsterdam. The event brings together ELIXIR members from across Europe and wider afield. After two years of online events we are excited to meet again in person. The programme structure will be similar to the past in-person events and include a series of workshops which are open for application.

A call for workshops is open until 8 December 2021. These workshops are open to all ELIXIR Platforms, Communities and Focus Groups, and should ideally be driven by a specific scientific question that can be answered by a cross-talk of multiple ELIXIR activities. The intention being to build connections between different areas of ELIXIR, encouraging groups to participate and engage with the work. More information on the assessment criteria is available on the website here.

ELIXIR BioHackathon 2021 Summary

From 8 - 12 November 2021, scientific researchers and developers from around the world gathered for our 4th edition of the ELIXIR BioHackathon, hosted this year in Barcelona.

Building on the success of previous years, the hybrid event welcomed 138 face-to-face and 172 virtual participants. The BioHackathon greatly serves some of ELIXIR’s founding objectives - to both advance the development of an open source infrastructure in Europe and to facilitate researchers to find and share data and exchange expertise. With this in mind, the 37 featured projects were chosen to align with the life science community at large through challenges proposed by ELIXIR Platforms, ELIXIR Communities, and ELIXIR Focus Groups. The event was a huge success, with approximately 97% of surveyed participants stating that they would recommend this event to their colleagues. What's more, it was also hugely productive, with 80% of surveyed participants estimated that work they completed at the BioHackathon would have taken between a month and a year to complete, with an additional 13% stating that the work would have never been completed without the BioHackathon.

Collaborators from ELIXIR Belgium participated in multiple projects, as well as leading two projects:

All projects made significant progress, and the full details of their outputs can be found on the ELIXIR BioHackathon Europe 2021 GitHub repository. BioHackathon Europe 2022 will take place 7 - 11 November - so save the date!

ELIXIR Norway Announces New Node Services
Our Call is Coming Up in Spring 2022!

ELIXIR Norway recently announced the launch of 8 new node services to be incorporated into the ELIXIR Europe service registry. The registry consists of the collective services from across all Nodes and constitutes a curated list of specialised databases, software tools, training programs, compute resources and other online resources reviewed by each Node's respective Scientific Advisory Board.

Typically, new Node services are added following a positive assessment by this international committee for factors such as scientific focus and quality, quality of service, maturity, sustainability and impact. At ELIXIR Belgium, a call for Node services is launched every two years, and the next call will open in Spring 2022.

Workshop: SARS-CoV-2 Data Analysis and Monitoring with Galaxy
1 December, 2021 | Online

The goal of this 1-day workshop is to enable groups doing SARS-CoV-2 sequencing to learn how to use pre-built Galaxy workflows to quickly generate consensus sequences. During the workshop, there will be live support in chat and live Q&A sessions, in which experts from New England Biolabs and the Galaxy community will answer questions. This workshop is open for everybody, but the target audience is clinicians and researchers that deal with SARS-CoV-2 sequencing data.
