GBIO Wins Allocation from Boston’s American Recovery Plan Act

The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization is encouraged by a recent allocation of at least $50 million from Boston’s American Recovery Plan Act Funds. The funds will go toward deferred maintenance at the Boston Housing Authority’s (BHA) Mildred C. Hailey Apartments. Both Boston Mayoral Candidates Michelle Wu and Anissa Essaibi George, along with nineteen of the twenty-three candidates or sitting Boston City councilors have made the $50 million commitment.  This funding is a down payment on the future of public housing in the Commonwealth.

Mayor Barrett and Common Ground Announce Milwaukee Joining National Gun Safety Consortium

On November 10, Common Ground leaders stood by Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett as he signed into law a resolution to have the city of Milwaukee join the National Gun Safety Consortium.  “We are working together to tackle the issue of unsecured guns,” stated Rev. Rob Ater of Immanuel Presbyterian Church and part of the Common Ground Strategy Team. “We want to recognize Mayor Barrett for his leadership on this.”

Common Ground is not alone in its efforts to help end gun violence.  Metro IAF affiliates across the country are organizing mayors and police chiefs to promote the development, distribution, and use of gun security products that gun owners will actually use. Conventional gun locks and safes are seen by many as too slow or unwieldy to unlock in an emergency. As a result, over 50% of gun owners do not regularly lock up their firearms.

Unanimous Support Garnered for ONE Wake Housing Initiative

On Tuesday, November 9, more than 40 ONE Wake members and allies turned out to support the adoption of the Cary Housing Plan, which was unanimously approved by Town Council. Then, on Thursday night, ONE Wake called on Town Council candidates to take another step forward by supporting local funding to ensure that the Housing Plan becomes a reality.

350 households logged in to ONE Wake's assembly with candidates for Cary Town Council Thursday night. Together, they called on the candidates to react to the deepening housing crisis in town and to hear whether they supported the creation of a dedicated local fund for affordable housing.

2022 Persuasive Writing Workshop for Community Leaders & Organizers

Join former IAF Organizer Greg Pierce and former DuPage United/Fox River Valley Initiative Organizer Adrienne McCauley for twelve hours of online group training and discussion.  Participants of the workshop will gain a better understanding of why writing is a vital tool for all.

Some goals of the session include clarifying and digesting why writing should be important to community leaders and organizers, learning a variety of techniques specific to persuasive writing, and dealing with the specific constraints that go hand in hand with organizing writing.
