Your Weekly Dose of Uptown Love!

I am super proud that I can now say I have performed at a Moth Mainstage. Not once but twice. The first was on June 30 of this year where I performed at the venerable United Palace alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda as well as Quiara Alegria Hudes, Esdras Santana and Edgar Ruiz Jr. to close out the 2021 Uptown Arts Stroll. The second time was two weekends ago when I performed at a sold-out show of 1100+ people at Princeton University with Amanda Burrill, Britney Cooper, Harjas Singh and Kelli Dunham. Much love to Dame Wilburn for doing a masterful job of hosting the event. The first performance has been immortalized as a Moth Radio Hour and is currently playing on public radio stations across the country and is available on podcasting platforms everywhere starting today. Please check it out below and share with abandon.

On November 12, 2001, on the heels of September 11, the nation’s 2nd deadliest plane crash shook up the country but had a much more profound and personal impact Uptown. Flight 587 bound for the Dominican Republic crashed shortly after take-off in Queens killing all 260 people aboard the flight. A full 90% of those onboard were of Dominican descent. Many people in this community knew someone who lost their life on that flight. Nicole Acevedo and Raul A. Reyes penned a great piece in NBC News on the pain and anguish of the relatives of those poor souls that lost their life on that fateful day.

Hard to believe but November 7, 2021 marks one year since AP called Pennsylvania and the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden. Uptown erupted in spontaneous celebration. Even though Biden won the popular vote by over 7 million votes, Trump and the Republican Party have propagated the big lie that the election was stolen. The big lie persists. Trump remains a threat to our democracy. A win for Trump in 2024 will mark the end of the American Experiment. For now, click below to see how Uptown celebrated the defeat of the tyrant.
