With our planet in crisis and communities being impacted by growing challenges, higher education is called to action to take the lead in addressing two of the world’s most pressing social issues: Climate Change and Food Insecurity. Faculty are well positioned to help prepare students to address these complex global problems. To help prepare faculty for this vital role, we are offering a timely one-week virtual course with three live sessions
(December 13, 14 and 16th from 2:30-4:30pm EST) stemming from Maine Campus Compact's Campuses for Environmental Stewardship (CES) program. This FREE course will bring together faculty participants to consider ways to implement community-engaged teaching/learning while addressing many critical topics. Maine Hunger Dialogue (MHD)
The Maine Hunger Dialogue, hosted by UMaine Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with Maine Campus Compact, was held on Friday, October 22, 2021 at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). Community members, faculty, staff and students gathered in person in the UMF Olsen Student Center and remotely via Zoom to hear from the keynote, discuss food insecurity in Maine, listen to first-hand experience from exiting program providing food at their colleges, and learn some healthy tips about cooking and meal-prep before getting the opportunity to plan ways they can get involved. The event kicked off with featured keynote speaker, Maine Senator Craig Hickman, who discussed the importance of food and feeding the people of Maine. This was followed by an informational session that addressed causes and issues related to food insecurity at institutions of higher education, and allowed participants to hear insights from those who operate community and college food pantries in the state before an interesting demonstration that showed participants ways to add a healthy touch to budget eating and meal prep.
