Protect Your Pipes This Thanksgiving

No matter who you're with or what's on the menu, many of us will spend a lot of time in the kitchen this holiday season. When you're caught up in the cooking chaos, it's easy to forget about your sink. If you've ever wondered what happens to fats, oils and grease (FOG) after they disappear down your drain, the real story is less "Charlie Brown," and more "Nightmare Before Christmas!"

FOG begins as a liquid and is easy to pour while hot. As it cools, it hardens into a solid. Unfortunately, many residents make the mistake of pouring hot, liquid FOG down the drain - but it doesn't stay liquid for long.  As it cools, it solidifies inside your plumbing. Over time, this built up material can clog and break sewer pipes, leading to costly (and smelly!) damage to your home.

Prevent a sewer overflow at your home by collecting liquid FOG in a re-sealable container, like a mason jar. Once the container becomes full, bring the container to the City of Frisco’s Environmental Collection Center for proper disposal. FOG is recycled into biodiesel, a cleaner alternative fuel source that powers school buses in the greater-DFW area.

So, remember to safely dispose of FOG and protect your pipes this holiday season!
In observance of Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 25, residential recycling and trash services will be delayed by one day.  This means Thursday services will move to Friday, and Friday services will move to Saturday. Regular service days will resume on Monday, November 29.

The Environmental Services offices and the Environmental Collection Center at 6616 Walnut Street will be closed November 25 - 27. Both facilities will reopen on Monday, November 29.

CENTRAL STANDARD TIME WATERING

The City of Frisco's time-of-day watering restriction ended on Sunday, November 7.  The city relaxes this time-of-day restriction during Central Standard Time, as it allows residents flexibility to water during the day, if necessary. This minimizes the risks associated with watering in the evenings - when temperatures may dip below freezing.

Remember, running sprinkler systems during a rain event or when temperatures dip below 40 degrees constitutes a watering violation.
