Rising to the Top in 2022: Utilizing SEL Opportunities to Support the Whole Child

Happy New Year! As part of a whole child model for teaching, learning, and caring, ALL4SC - Accelerating Learning & Leadership for South Carolina – envisions evidence-based SEL strategies as an integral component of learning and development for all students, teachers, families, and communities.
 
The February SEL newsletter details a variety of tools to support children, educators, and families, and make social and emotional learning a central focus in and out of the classroom.

What’s Coming Up: Trainings and Webinars for Ongoing SEL Learning

February is packed with trainings and webinars hosted by National University’s Harmony and Inspire. Each workshop gives educators opportunities to learn more about the components of the Harmony social emotional learning curriculum and Inspire professional development portals. As illustrated below, partners of National University will hold events throughout the month to support educators in daily practices or devote time to specific grade-levels to help guide users to incorporate SEL skills in any setting. To register for an event, simply click on the title of the workshop and go directly to the registration page.

SEL Lesson Snapshot - Problem Solving

Activity Suggestion for the Classroom: The Animals of Conflict 

Begin by discussing everyday conflicts

  • Ask the class for examples
  • Discuss conflict and how it can have positive outcomes
  • Discuss the importance of resolving conflicts effectively

After classroom discussion, give students time to think of a conflict they have seen in school and then write it on a strip of paper. Collect all the papers and randomly pick one to discuss with the class. How could it be resolved? What could be done differently? The lesson highlights effectively resolving conflict.

After the class has had time to discuss, let the students work in groups to use the provided options and suggestions to learn more about conflict resolution. After the group discussions, record the brainstormed ideas on the board, grouped into three conflict resolution styles. As a class, discuss the different approaches to resolving conflict by connecting them to animals.

New Video Podcast Covering Transformative Education in SC

This Thursday, ALL4SC will launch the first episode of ElevatED4SC, a video podcast for community leaders who believe it’s time to stop nibbling around the edges of education reform and move to real transformation. ElevatED4SC tells success stories of how education transformation is already happening in some South Carolina schools. This podcast explores what other states are doing to meet similar challenges and shares what education could look like with a whole child approach.
