Agriculture is crucial to making inroads in reducing poverty and advancing livelihoods. It also plays a central role in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals – from ending hunger and improving nutrition, to promoting sustainable agriculture and tackling climate change.

Yet, agriculture faces challenges, including to safeguard natural resources and respond to shifting demographics or to supply chain shocks like COVID-19, to name a few. The recent State of Food and Agriculture 2021 report acknowledges these challenges and calls for action to make agri-food systems more resilient, efficient, sustainable, and inclusive.

Farming First has recently heard from experts on some of these transformations taking place, such as market-focussed agricultural opportunities in South Africa, and the importance of technology to bring youth into agriculture.
