Looming Concerns Around Omicron Variant
 

News of the COVID-19 Omicron variant has sparked uneasiness about transmission potential and current safety protocols, and universities are weighing their options around mandates and campus health messaging.

Several universities have begun proactively communicating amid the uncertainty, re-emphasizing the steps they are taking to keep their campus communities safe and providing updates on what the Omicron variant could mean for campus life.
Proactive University Responses to Omicron Variant:
  • Harvard University leaned into its faculty and community experts, publishing a Q&A with the school's existing COVID-19 advisory committees to address how the Omicron variant might impact current protocols
  • University of Arizona President Robert Robbins utilized a pre-existing virtual news conference as a medium to emphasize the potential for new information to emerge rapidly and be confusing as the university and outside agencies consider future guidance
  • The University of California-Los Angeles shared a campus-wide email on Wednesday announcing new guidelines for on-campus events, citing preliminary research on the Omicron variant's symptoms and how the protocols align with keeping the community safe
  • Stanford University distributed a campus-wide email on Tuesday sharing detailing what is currently known about the Omicron variant. The email also encouraged campus community members and their families not to panic and included travel planning suggestions to address commonly asked questions as well as a timeline for when more information can be expected
  • Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health posted a series of graphics on its Facebook page detailing what is known and unknown around the Omicron variant as well as when more information might be available
