  • NASA Pi Day Challenge

You may already know all about the mathematical constant pi (π) and how it can be used to calculate things like the circumference of a circle or the volume of a sphere. But did you know pi is also used all the time by NASA scientists and engineers to explore other planets?

In this challenge, you can solve some of the same problems NASA scientists and engineers do using pi!

The Wordle Craze

Wordle is a daily game where the user gets six guesses to come up with the five-letter secret word of the day in as few turns as possible. After each guess, the color of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the word. Everyone is given the same word daily, and after 24 hours, the word changes. The web-based game Wordle can be played on a desktop browser or mobile device at www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

In this blog post, Dan Meyer talks about Why Wordle Works, According to Desmos Lesson Developers. Personally, I love the way Wordle gives opportunities for reasoning, problem solving, and productive struggle and be used to frame classroom discourse about these. If you'd like to give this a try, here are a few resources to use with your students.

TODOS Live: Gutiérrez: Subversive Teaching to Rehumanize Mathematics

The combined events of Covid, Black Lives Matter, and climate change have opened the door for many teachers to question what is happening in the world and what is our place in it? This session supports teachers to reflect on what is considered “normal” in mathematics teaching and learning and what it will take to rehumanize mathematics when so many people and institutions are actively protecting the status quo.
