Happy Holidays from your WaterWise Team!

This week, we're serving up some surprisingly simple tips to help you celebrate sustainably this season!

Warm water for the win. Many of us dread doing the dishes, especially when they're piled high after a holiday meal. If you have a dishwasher, use it efficiently!  Save water and time by waiting to run the dishwasher until you have a full load. When hand-washing, plug the sink and allow dishes to soak instead of running the tap over every plate. Let warm water do the work for you (unless you'd rather loosen up all that sticky, slimy, stuck-on food by hand).  Soak your dishes and spend less time stuck at the sink - so you can get back to celebrating!

Save your scraps. Skip the smelly sink back-up... instead of throwing food scraps into the garbage disposal, transfer them to your backyard compost pile or use a composting service, like Turn. Spring will be here before you know it, and you'll need that compost to grow your garden!  Make sure your leftovers don't go to waste either; package them up for family and friends (or freeze them for later). Don't forget to donate surplus, unopened, non-perishable foods to your local food pantry.

Fight FOG. "Be nice" this holiday, and dispose of fats, oils and grease (FOG) the responsible way. Transfer cooled cooking oil and grease into a sealed container and drop it off at the Environmental Collection Center in the designated Cooking Oil/Grease container. Never pour fats, oils or grease down a sink drain... that "naughty" move may lead to clogged wastewater pipes in your home (and precious few things are worse than a sewer overflow while your parents and in-laws are visiting)!

In observance of Christmas, The Environmental Services offices and the Environmental Collection Center at 6616 Walnut Street will be closed December 24 - 25. Both facilities will reopen on Monday, December 27.

In observance of New Year's Day, The Environmental Services offices and the Environmental Collection Center will be closed December 31 - January 1. Both facilities will reopen on Monday, January 3.

As both holidays fall on a Saturday this year, there will be no holiday schedule changes to residential recycling or trash services for either holiday.
