New Disability Employment Services model

The Australian Government is committed to assisting more people with disability into jobs so they can enjoy the social and economic benefits that work brings. People with disability and employers need a system that meets their needs and provides the appropriate supports to find and keep a job. The current Disability Employment Services (DES) program concludes 30 June 2023, and will be replaced by the new disability employment support model.

The Government is actively working to ensure that the new disability employment support model is designed with people with disability at the centre. We want your help to create a model that best supports people with disability to find and maintain employment, and supports employers to employ people with disability and ensure their employment is successful.

The Government has already heard from many people about what is important to them through the consultations for Australia’s Disability Strategy, Disability Employment Strategy and the Disability Royal Commission. However, it is important to ensure that people with disability, their families and carers are involved in these important reforms to disability employment services.

The Department of Social Services (DSS) has been engaging with disability employment organisations, DES providers and many other stakeholders through a series of working group meetings designed to work through issues for a range of disability cohorts. PricewaterhouseCoopers has also been engaged to run a series of workshops with people with disability and carers across Australia to assist in designing the new model.

As the next step in the engagement process, DSS is undertaking public consultation to give more people a chance to have a say on what the new disability employment support model should look like. We want your feedback and ideas on how we can achieve meaningful change and help more people with disability prepare for work, get a job, keep working and progress their careers. The New Disability Employment Support Model Consultation Paper sets out what we know and what we think could help.

Submissions close 4 January 2022.

The UK Government will remove VI-1 certification for all wine imports from 1st January, 2022.

The United Kingdom’s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced it will remove the requirement for all wine imports to be accompanied by VI-1 certificates.   Once in place, this change will simplify exporting wine to the UK.  This change is an example of the UK moving away from the EU regulatory framework following the Brexit transition period.

Exporters will still need VI-1 certification for wine exported into the European Union (EU).  This includes Australian wine re-exported to the EU through the UK.
The Local Jobs Program brings together expertise, resources and access to funding at the local level to support job seekers and their communities in each region.  The program has a particular focus on reskilling, upskilling and employment pathways and is part of supporting Australia’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A monthly newsletter has been developed to provide information regarding current programs and initiatives available to inform stakeholders in their efforts supporting individuals into employment.

Foundation skills in the workplace research

TasTAFE and 26TEN are partnering up to conduct research about foundation skills in the workplace and we would love to know about the impact of these skills in YOUR business.  This research will inform the creation of a flexible training tool kit for managers and supervisors, to support 'in house' foundation skill development for workers. We invite you to complete our short (10 minute) survey.

A review of Tasmanian industry Workplace Development Plans (located on Skills Tasmania website) listed 10 out of 17 industries identifying that they needed support with the development of foundation skills in the workplace.

What are foundation skills? They are the skills that underpin workforce participation, and include:
  • language (oral communication)
  • literacy (reading and writing)
  • digital literacy
  • numeracy
  • learning skills
Foundation skills that are not aligned to your workplace can have a significant negative impact on business outcomes. Talking about foundation skills can be confronting and uncomfortable as there is a stigma around not being able to read and write (interestingly, this doesn't seem to exist when it comes to numeracy!)
Wicking Dementia Research: The Island Project

A TEAM of four researchers is preparing to run the 480-kilometre Tasmanian Trial over five days this month to raise much-needed funds for Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia research.

Run for the ISLAND is a fundraising initiative of the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, aimed at lowering cases of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia in Tasmania.

Dementia is a devastating non-discriminatory and fatal condition, quickly becoming the leading cause of death in Australia. There is currently no known cure.

Researchers are seeking to make dementia a distant memory but cannot do it alone.
The Tasmanian business and industry sector is being called on to help the cause, with funds going to support further research into dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease prevention.

Researchers will don their running shoes on December 18 in Devonport and will finish in Dover on December 23.  Each runner will complete a 25-30km stretch of the trail a day per day of the event, while holding community information sessions along the way.
