Keeping the Flame of Hope Alive

This Sunday falls at the end of the eight days of Hanukkah, a Jewish festival commemorating the Maccabean overthrow of colonizing rule.  A Talmudic story tells how a jug of oil, expected to last only one night, burned instead for eight.  How do we keep the flame alive in these challenging times?  How do we sustain strength and courage when events around us threaten to deplete us?

A Christmas carol

Born in 1812, Charles Dickens was forced to leave school at 12 years of age to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtor's prison. Dickens eventually returned to school, became a world-renowned journalist and author with a life long mission to expose the inequities of poverty. He railed against social stratification, writing about poverty, poor working and sanitary conditions, child labor and slavery. His story about the spirit of Christmas, "A Christmas Carol" may be one of his best known works. Did you know that Charles Dickens has Unitarian roots? This Sunday, we will explore the legacy of Charles Dickens and it's relevance to our modern times.

“The Christ and the Buddha”

Some goodhearted people maintain that “in end, all religions are basically the same.” This hardly seems the case with Christianity and Buddhism, which appear to be polar opposites, at least on the surface. Despite the striking differences, is there a deeper current that connects these two great traditions? This is a fitting exploration for December, which marks both Bodhi Day (December 8) and the birth of Jesus (December 25)

Minister's Corner

Look for the Minister's Corner the first CUUB News of each month.

The Ministry Team invites you to: Rebuilding community

What's on your mind, CUUBies? "Re-Building Community" is just what it says.  It is your chance to help rebuild CUUB as the staffing challenges (SE leadership & Settled Ministry) have left us smaller and possibly unsure of our path to success.

So each Thursday at 8:00 pm is an informal time to come together to re-connect, chat, discuss and hang out.  Bring your ideas, frustrations, insights & love for CUUB to share with each other.

We hope to see you there... https://zoom.us/j/92840233619

Facilities News

You may know that CUUB has experienced vandalism of our property.  Flags, banners & signs have all been stolen or destroyed.  Because of our standing as a liberal voice in a consultative area and almost all of the acts of destruction have been toward liberal ideas some members who use our building have not felt safe here.

Because of these issues the board has approved the installation of cameras so members & friends can view the outside of the building before arriving or departing CUUB.  Besides the cameras our outside lights will also be modified.  One light at each corner of the building will be on from dark until dawn (they will be upgrade to LED's to minimize the carbon impact of this change).  A second light will be activate by motion.  The combination of the cameras & lighting changes should deter or catch deviant action against CUUB and allow our members to do a safety check while using the facilities.

If you want to help with this project please contact Lee (who is coordinating installation) to let him know.  313-350-3482   leeanzicek@gmail.com\

Follow up From Last Week's Service

See below for the link to the Community Healing Ceremony on December 6th,  a service of reconciliation for veterans. This service is sponsored by the Moral Injury Group referenced by Rev. Chris Antal on Sunday...linked to his ministry as a VA Chaplain. Attendance at this online service is one way that we can support and address the healing of our veterans. There is a full description and instructions for participating when you click on the link.

CUUB Sale Update

We have sold an item donated by Barb Robinson family to our very own Dave Beeman.  Dave now has a corner display case and CUUB's FACES team has raised some needed $$$.  Thanks you to all who help keep us on sound financial ground.

If you see something stored at CUUB that interests you please contact the FACES team and let them know what you are willing to give for what item.  Note that these transactions do NOT count toward your annual financial commitment (pledge) but ARE a great way to get some cool things at a very reasonable cost.

6 chairs - 2 lamps - box of issues - for the grandchild - spice up your place.

And remember we are NOT accepting donations for the garage sale without prior authorization, our storage space if more that full.  Please store any items and we will let you know when to bring them in.

Kroger Community Rewards Program Provides Extra Dollars for CUUB

Participation in the Kroger Community Rewards Program is easy. There is no need nor benefit in saving receipts. Simply go to https://www.kroger.com/i/community/community-rewards and create a digital account; then choose CUUB (Organization Number FV634) as the organization you wish to support.  Your Kroger Shopper’s Card is then linked to CUUB, and every time you shop and present your card at the checkout CUUB receives credit.  There is no extra cost to you.  In fact, using your Shopper’s Card makes you eligible for lower pricing on many items throughout the store.

We thank the many CUUB families who are already earning dollars for CUUB through this program.

Thank you all for your assistance! Email: faces@cuub.org

Welcoming Congregation

CUUB became a Welcoming Congregation several years ago for the LGBTQ+ community. Recently the UUA began an annual renewal program. Our Worship and Social Justice Teams are in the process of gathering information to submit our renewal.

What does this mean? There are several welcoming practices that are required.

  • Welcoming Worship Services and Days of Observance– LGBTQ topics throughout the year in our ordinary calendar of services and observance of Pride Month, naming rituals, LGBTQ marriage ceremonies etc.

  • Welcoming Religious Education – Offering an annual seminar using UUA approved material. CUUB can register for a webinar or choose to sponsor one locally for ourselves and our community.

  • Supporting a Welcoming Project – Giving of our time and resources through volunteerism or monetary donation.

There is no rigid deadline for submission of what we are doing/have done. We are gathering data to include in our application. Any ideas are welcome.
