The FOLAR Board of Directors is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS. These awards honor the impact of individuals and organizations who have made a difference for our community through exemplary service and philanthropy in support of conserving and protecting the Appomattox River for all to enjoy.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR: EDIE GOLDEN; Edie has provided sustained and outstanding technical support to create a new GIS tool which will serve as a valuable resource for FOLAR as we work to advance land conservation along the Appomattox River.

BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY AWARD: HOPEWELL MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION (HMA), ANDY GIRVIN, PRESIDENT; The HMA’s responsive and generous charitable gift to FOLAR this year provided timely support of our work to build the Appomattox River Trail as a world-class path to learning, wellness, conservation, and prosperity for the region.

STEWARDSHIP AWARD: CHRIS RIZZO, FOLAR DIRECTOR; Chris has been a long-time extraordinary volunteer in support of FOLAR programs and events in addition to now serving on the Board and providing charitable financial giving leadership.

GOVERNMENT AGENCY AWARD: CITY OF PETERSBURG, CITY MANAGER STUART TURILLE & MAYOR SAMUEL PARHAM with City Council leadership and staff support have made significant advancements in support of expanding the Petersburg section of the Appomattox River Trail as showcased by the newly opened University Boulevard Trailhead.

FRIEND OF FOLAR AWARD: JOHN BARRAR; John dedicated many volunteer hours of IT and video technology support as well as generous charitable financial support to the organization to help grow awareness of the importance of FOLAR’s mission.

COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD: AARON REIDMILLER, DIRECTOR OF HOPEWELL RECREATION & PARKS with staff support has helped improve the quality of life in our community through significant support of FOLAR’s educational and recreational programs including the largest-ever 2021 FOLAR Paddle-or-Battle.

TRAIL BLAZER AWARD: ROBERTA & WALTER PURCELL, MIKE WERKHEISER; A tireless family team of volunteers who have provided extraordinary and enthusiastic service and dedication in support of our many FOLAR programs and needs.
