Dear <<First Name>>

We hope that you are well and looking forward to hopefully an uninterrupted football season in 2022. It has been great to see so many members of all ages getting back into football including summer football competitions and the free Coerver Coaching sessions we held recently.

You would have received an email recently from the NSFA about constructing their home of football at North Turramurra Recreation Reserve (NTRA).

This is a fabulous project which the club committee supports to ensure that our juniors have the best opportunity possible to enjoy their football and also advance their football to higher levels through the Northern Tigers. The project does not impact the grounds space and includes new amenities including female change rooms, a grandstand and a community space that will be used by local dance, yoga, pilates and other groups. We encourage you to please support the project as follows:

The feedback deadline is Saturday 4 December 2021.

New Northern Tigers Players from WPFC!
A big congratulations to following players who have made it into Northern Tigers representative teams for the 2022 season:

  • Harvey Atkinson from our U8 SAP team last season
  • Claire Fisher from our G10 Development Squad and the U10 SAP team
  • Inge Ackland from our U18 Diamond League team

We look forward to observing with interest the footballing journeys of Harvey, Claire and Inge.

Norman Griffiths Oval Synthetic Pitch
We were delighted to be informed recently that the contract to construct the Norman Griffiths Oval synthetic pitch project has been signed. The project has moved into the Design Phase with the revised timeline scheduling the commencement of construction works in March 2022. It’s very exciting for our club and its members that this fabulous new facility will soon be available for our members to enjoy playing more football all year around on a safer and higher quality surface.

West Pymble Football Club Committee members attended the Comenarra Forum of Councillor Candidates held last Tuesday 23 November at the West Pymble Bicentennial Club. There has recently been some publicity from a minority of objectors about the Norman Griffiths Oval synthetic pitch project.

It was pleasing that it was mentioned by Comenarra Councillor candidates that the local community was overwhelmingly in support of the project as reflected by Council submissions during the consultation period for which submissions were well over 90% supportive of the project.

As a Committee we would never do anything that could adversely impact our members or local environment and the Forum provided us with the opportunity to reinforce Council’s thorough environment assessment process as well as environmental benefits of the new pitch, including removing chemicals or herbicides that are required for natural turf pitches and an opportunity to harvest water that will be stored in tanks under the ground for other purposes including potentially by the West Pymble Bicentennial Club whom are big supporters of the project.

The candidates at the Comenarra Forum who indicated support for the Norman Griffiths Oval synthetic pitch project and other facilities improvements as follows:

  • Boru Tumulty (independent not aligned with any party or resident action group): West Pymble resident and former member of the Club Committee who helped to get the synthetic pitch project across the line. Boru also indicated support for a premium natural turf upgrade of Mimosa Oval and has advised that he supports the NTRA Development project as well as the transition of the Gordon Bowling Club into a recreational facility including football pitch.

  • Patricia Lynch: Is the number 2 candidate on the ticket of Jeff Pettett, one of the two incumbent Comenarra Councillors, who unanimously voted in support of the budget to fund the Norman Griffiths Oval synthetic pitch at the September 2021 Council meeting

  • Jayamala Gupta: A Liberal Party member

  • Roshan Wickramanayake: A Liberal Party member

  • Another candidate Gurdeep Singh (a Liberal Party member) was not present at the Forum but has advised us that he supports the Norman Griffiths Oval synthetic pitch project.

Whilst we prefer not to recommend candidates to members, given the publication of much information recently on the project - including much misinformation - we wanted to clarify which candidates support our major club facilities project which we believe will positively transform our club for the benefit of our members.

Our research has indicated that the environmental assessments and hurdles required by Council have been thorough and have been cleared - Council have already committed to an organic infill such as cork (i.e. not rubber) which will ensure no negative impact on local waterways in the unlikely event that infill leaves the ground.

Our research has also indicated that there are no natural grass alternatives which would materially improve our current usage levels of the ground, especially given that the current oval is also a flood detention basin. We encourage members to vote this Saturday to have their say and to not waste their vote.

Also a reminder to WPFC members that 2022 will be the club’s 65th anniversary. Stay tuned for updates on events to celebrate our anniversary over the course of next season.

Regards,
Kevin Johnson
on behalf of the WPFC Committee
