December 2021 Newsletter

Hi EA PH Community Member,

EA Philippines is having a year-end event this Dec. 18, 8pm-9:45pm, to highlight our community’s progress this year and also have some fun. Read about it and sign up below! We also got you covered in this season of giving with cause-specific giving guides. We are also featuring EA Philippines’ Mental Health Charity Ideas Research co-led by Brian Tan, Shen Javier, and AJ Sunglao. And as always, we have some events, resources, and updates for you!

Giving Guide

The season of giving is here! And if you’re thinking of donating by the end of the year, which we would encourage, here’s a guide for you to consider. Though these resources are from the Global North, we think we can still adopt these cause-specific guides in our donation because of the positive impact their recommended charities can make globally. You can check out this general giving guide by Giving What We Can on what are the best charities globally to donate to this year. If you would like a specific giving guide or recommendations for each of EA’s top causes, then check out the links below:

Global Development: GiveWell and Global Health & Development Fund

Mental Health: Happier Lives Institute

Animal Welfare: Animal Charity Evaluators and Animal Welfare Fund

Climate Change: Giving Green

Longtermism: Long-Term Future Fund

How about local charities? We definitely receive queries from our community on which local charities should they donate to. And so some of us in EA Philippines, led by Tanya Quijano and Brian Tan, did research on this topic and came up with a tentative list of recommended local charities

Vitamin Angels is currently our top charity recommendation for their work in providing at-risk populations access to life-saving and life-changing vitamins and minerals like vitamin A supplements. So if you are keen on donating to an effective local charity, we highly recommend you support Vitamin Angels Philippines’ work by donating to their local partner Haligi ng Bata, Inc. You can donate to them using the information below. Any amount is appreciated! You’ll need to email Haligi ng Bata your proof of deposit, so they can specify that it’s for their vitamin A supplementation program.

Extreme poverty: how far have we come, how far do we still have to go?

🏚️ Poverty remains to be the biggest problem of our time. Even after two centuries of progress, one in ten people in the world today still face the sad reality of extreme poverty. This is what the ‘international poverty line’ highlights – this metric plays an important (and successful) role in focusing the world’s attention on these very poorest people in the world. Be more ambitious: a rational case for dreaming big (if you want to do good)

💭 The bottomline: be more ambitious. Why? Just take these three nuggets of wisdom: (1) Success is possible, (2) Your downsides are limited, and (3) The expected value of pursuing the path is high. Sounds encouraging? Read the full article from 80,000 Hours here.

Is therapy the best way to make the world happier and better?

💵 Giving cash is one of the most cost-effective ways to help the world’s poor. Other highly cost-effective interventions are distributing anti-malaria bed nets and vitamin A supplements. But how about providing therapy? A recent study by the Happier Lives Institute shows that providing evidence-based therapy to improve mental health in low-or-middle-income countries is likely 12x as cost-effective as unconditional cash transfers. Find out more here in this Vox article.

Updates from the local EA community

EA UP Diliman’s Talk on Animal Welfare

EA UPD held an event on animal welfare last November 27. The event featured some leaders in the animal advocacy space, including PAWS’s Executive Director Anna Cabrera, World Animal Protection’s Campaign Manager Vince Cinches, and Global Food Partners’s Chief Operating Officer Jayasimha Nuggehall. They talked about the experiences that shaped their lives in working for animal welfare, as well as ideas on animal suffering, animal ethics, and opportunities and spaces to maximize one's career and resources in positively impacting animals.

Project Spotlight:
EA Philippines’ Mental Health
Charity Ideas Research

We announced in our September newsletter that EA Philippines got a grant to research on what are the top new mental health charity ideas to launch in Southeast Asia, with a focus on the Philippines. Now we’d like to write more details about the project and team!

This project is co-led by Brian Tan, co-founder of EA Philippines, Shen Javier, founder of EA UP Diliman, and AJ Sunglao, a licensed psychologist with six years of professional experience relevant to mental health.

We received a grant of ~PHP 543,000 from the EA Infrastructure Fund for this. The grant funds part-time salaries for Brian and Shen on this project, and it also allowed us to hire three people to work for us at 15 hours per week each for six months. The 3 people we hired are AJ Sunglao, Mae Muñoz and Zam Superable. Mae is the research head of the Philippine Mental Health Association, while Zam is a freelance design researcher at Curiosity, a design research consultancy firm. Both Mae and Zam are also currently taking an MA in Psychology at UP Diliman!

We are focusing on ideas that would work well if started first in the Philippines since we expect there to be some highly cost-effective mental health charity ideas here. Our goals are to find mental health charity ideas that Charity Entrepreneurship would be willing to incubate in 2022 or 2023, improve the research skills of everyone involved, and do research that will help others cost-effectively improve mental health in the Philippines and/or Southeast Asia. We hope to publish our research findings around April or May 2022!
