Capital Project Update

Dear Canton Central School Community,

In May, voters approved a $27.5 million Capital Project. Since the vote, faculty and staff have worked with architects from King & King to share ideas on what is needed in classrooms, offices and workspaces. It is estimated that construction will take two full years to complete, and is on track to begin in 2023. On January 6th, members of the architectural team will present a detailed update to the community at the Board of Education meeting.

Within the scope of the project, our three kitchens and serving lines will be renovated. This part of the project will involve the replacement of cooking equipment, dishwashers and serving lines.  Traffic flow will also be improved to allow students and staff to access these areas regardless of physical ability.

Additionally, the pool facilities will be relocated to the area adjacent to the high school gymnasium, where locker rooms and athletic offices are currently located. This will allow for spectator seating in the pool house to nearly double it's current capacity. The locker rooms will be moved to the area currently housing CTE classrooms, and the concession stand will be relocated to the end of the hallway. The concession stand will also include a serving window to accommodate outdoor events. By completion, the fitness center will more than double it's current footprint.

The building currently housing the pool will become a new music suite, consisting of a choral classroom, a band classroom, a general music classroom, an instrument storage space, practice rooms, and a recording studio. Further complementing the Arts Program, the room behind the current auditorium stage will be remodeled for use by performers preparing to take stage.

In the middle school, there will be reconstruction to create new classroom and lab spaces for Agriculture, Technology, and Family & Consumer Sciences.

The high school office complex will be remodeled, including a window that allows for guests to be greeted by the office secretary upon arrival. More private meeting spaces will be also added for individuals and families meeting with the building principal.

Similarly, there will be minor modifications made to the Banford office. This portion of the project will create a secure access widow for guests to be greeted, and for families signing students in and out of the building.

Current design work is now focusing on outdoor areas and facilities including the bus garage, parking lots, and an artificial turf field.

Regards,
Ron Burke
