Meditation is not a luxury that you allow yourself when you have time. Meditation is a daily necessity. It is a very practical exercise for helping us to cope and to live better in the midst of our busy lives.
Meditation promotes resilience and that is something we all need right now - both teachers and children. Schools are so busy and active at the best of times but the pressures in schools right now, in the midst of this fourth wave of the pandemic, is soul-debilitating. So we need to set aside time to renew ourselves, to simply allow ourselves to be. We need to take a step back from the frantic nature of our daily doing and take time to discover again who we are at the centre of our being.
James Finley, a contemplative writer, reminds us that we spend so much of our lives racing around the outer circumference of the inner richness of our lives. We need to slow down and move our consciousness from the head to the heart.
And children need to appreciate that we can learn as much from the heart as we can from our heads. Click on the video below about the need for schools to educate the heart also.

Scientific studies today are very clear about the importance of educating the heart. It is so important to teach children about empathy and compassion, about self-awareness and self-esteem, about their innate dignity as persons and their inter-connectedness to others and to all of creation.
These vital skills help them to be successful not only in school but in their daily lives. Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.
My doctoral research indicates very clearly that meditation gives rise to a contemplative awareness that makes children aware of their true essence and, in their own words, 'makes them kinder.' Please, continue to encourage the children you care for to meditate at home as well as in school and please give them as many opportunities as you can to meditate in school, ideally on a whole-school basis.
