National Mutt Day
(also referred to as National Mixed Breed Day)

Did you know that National Mutt Day — recognizing the joy of mixed breed dogs — is celebrated not once but twice a year?   It’s been said that every dog has his day, but one-of-a-kind canines with intriguing ancestries have TWO days dedicated to celebrating their diverse DNA. Observed both on July 31st and December 2nd, since its launch in 2005 by celebrity pet and lifestyle expert Colleen Paige, National Mutt Day (also referred to as National Mixed Breed Day) has helped to shine a spotlight on our mixed breed dogs who may not have a pedigree, but who would be an integral part of a forever pet parent’s family tree.

Reasons to Adopt a Mixed Breed Dog
An estimated 80 percent of dogs who find themselves in the shelter system are not pure bred, but they are ready to give pure love to their special someone. Following are just a few of the many reasons to adopt a mixed breed dog.

If you opt to adopt a dog with an unknown lineage you are helping to end the plight of puppy mill dogs, who are forced by backyard breeders to live in nightmarish conditions as they give birth to litter after litter of puppies, many of whom are burdened with medical problems due to their sad start in life.

Adopting a mixed breed dog might mean fewer visits to the veterinarian! Many believe that dogs who are bred for specific traits are more likely to inherit a genetic disorder, while dogs with a complex gene pool are less likely to develop illnesses which target specific breeds.

The cost to welcome a mixed breed dog from a shelter or rescue into your heart and home is much less than that of a purebred dog. Shelter fees are much lower than those of breeders or pet stores, and many mixed breed dogs from shelters or rescue organizations are up to date on their vaccinations, spayed or neutered, and may even be microchipped.

The pet parent who chooses to adopt a mixed breed dog from a shelter may be saving their new barking buddy’s life and either buying time for another shelter animal by freeing a space in a kill facility or saving another life by emptying a cage at a no-kill shelter or rescue that will go to a dog in need. Each year 7.6 million companion animals enter the US shelter system, where 2.7 million face their fate.

Fun Facts
Did you know that many “Heinz 57” dogs have become stars on the big and small screen? The long list of dogs who have made the leap from shelter to stardom include:
  • Spike, a Mastiff/Labrador Retriever mix who moved movie audiences in the title role of Old Yeller.
  • Higgins, a terrier mix who wowed canine-loving movie crowds as Benji.
  • Aleister, a former shelter dog who starred as Sorry alongside Keira Knightley and Steve  Carell in the 2012 feature film Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
  • Barley, a Lurcher mix from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home who acts as Demelza’s canine companion Garrick in the BBC adaptation of author Winston Graham’s Poldark novels.
  • Marti, whose “Hard Knock Life” in a shelter later led to stardom as Sandy in the 2014 cinematic retelling of Annie.
  • Peanut, a Border Terrier mix who portrayed Baxter, the barking buddy of Ron Burgundy in the comedy Anchorman.
  • Bo, Chip, Kelly, Stella, Topsy and Zelda, all mixed breed dogs who together took on the role of The Grinch’s sidekick Max in the big screen retelling of the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
  • Ned, a mixed breed originally from a rural Mississippi shelter who got his big break playing Martin in the ABC series Downward Dog after he was “discovered” at PAWS Chicago.
Dogs who are an amalgam of breeds can be highly intelligent, and today mixed breed dogs from shelters are often chosen to train for vital roles as service dogs, search and rescue dogs and therapy dogs.

Donate to Help with Unexpected Medical Expenses

C.A.R.L. has recently seen an uptick in owner surrenders and as much as we would love to help every dog, we are still under financial stress from 2020, like many other nonprofits. We are hoping to receive a small donation to help offset a few extra medical expenses that we have incurred recently.

Peeka blue, came as an owner surrender after an unfortunate situation. She is blind, as one eye has already been removed. The other eye is set to be removed in mid November, due to past medical issues and she cannot see out of it. Leaving the non functioning eye in is causing her pain from chronic dry eye and inflammation.

Another medical expense is a litter of back yard bred puppies. This litter of 5 has only received one round of shots and will need more rounds, as well as getting spayed and neutered.

With your donation C.A.R.L. can provide the necessary medical needs that these dogs need. No donation is too small.

*Any extra funds will be put into use for other medical bills for other CARL dogs*

Donor Recognition

A recent email from donor Heidi

Hello,
About 16 years ago, I adopted 2 dogs from CARL, Benny aka Taz and Sampson.
They were my very best friends for two years and went everywhere with me.
I became severely ill and was told that I had less than 5 months to live and to check into a hospice because I was going to die. I had no friends or relatives to help me.

It broke my heart into a trillion pieces, but I brought Benny/Taz and Sampson back to CARL.
By some miracle I survived but Sampson had already been adopted out and Benny/Taz had become very dog aggressive and I didn't have the strength to handle him.  Unfortunately he was put to sleep at CARL at age 13.

I would like to donate $1,000 in each of their names towards CARL's winterizing project.
Please let me know if we can make this work.
Thank you,
Heidi

Thank you Heidi for your donation to CARL's winterizing project in honor of Benny/Taz and Sampson.

Update to

C.A.R.L.'s Winterizing Project

"A recent donation in honor of Benny/Taz  and Sampson has made possible to pay for about 60% of the electrician's invoice to add power to the CARL kennels." and

"Local business owner of Roadside Rescue Tow company in Santa Paula, just donated 10 brand new heaters to CARL."

We need to get more heaters and money to pay for an electrican to continue adding power to other kennels. We still need 41 heaters and 3 kennels to get power to them to plug in the heaters. We also need more clear, heavy duty tarps to hang on one remaining row.

C.A.R.L.'s Winterizing Project aims to upgrade the kennels so that no dog has to endure another cold night. We will install dog house heaters in the sleeping area of each kennel. We will continue to install clear, weather-proof tarps along the kennels and on the roofs to keep warm air in and cool air out. We will install LED lights in all of the kennels, for the safety of the dogs and the kennel staff.  The project began in the fall of 2020 in memory of our sweet Tanner, and in his name  we were able to raise $8,700!

An electrician has to be hired to upgrade the existing panel, add sub panels, and run conduit to each section of the kennels- both BBFF and CARL. Supporters have already donated 16 heaters; LED lights have already been placed in some sections; tarps have been purchased and installed in FF and CARL sections. We have $4,700 left over after these purchases and upgrades.  The quote from the electrician for the initial job is $9,800, so we still need to raise a bit more money before beginning this home stretch.

In loving memory of Tanner, Cole, and many more of CARL's senior dogs that we have had to say goodbye to, we want to make sure we are doing all we can for the future dogs of CARL.  Every donation helps make the dogs even just a bit more comfortable while they are with us <3
