Warm up your holiday season as The Beggar Boys bring traditional Christmas music from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales to the Pacific Northwest.

The ethereal voice of Abigail Lennox blends with fiddles, whistle, and guitar to create the Beggar Boys' signature blend of traditional songs and tunes and powerful originals, called "lush and revealing" by the Boston Globe.

This festive program will also feature Larry Young's dramatic storytelling and live Irish step dancing – a perfect family holiday treat.

"I have been printmaking and painting since college days at the University of Oregon.  Currently, I am exploring some new techniques, one of which is an abstract layering of color, texture, and line. This technique involves hand transfer of ink using pieces of plastic sheeting and a variety of tools for mark making. The results are rich and colorful. My favorite is a piece called “Crows.”
Another technique involves negative space and collage I am using some wonderful handmade organic papers for this to emphasize texture.
I am also continuing The Dreamer Series which are large prints done on my floor press combining print, collage, paint and ink.  The Dreamer was followed by Maria de la Man͂ana, then by The Fisherman. I am waiting to see who will show up next."

Whidbey Art Gallery
We are looking forward to an exciting month at Whidbey Art Gallery with our
Art Under $100 event. You will find many items in our front room and throughout the gallery that would make great gifts, or a little something special for yourself. Look for a yellow dot on items from pottery, calligraphy, and jewelry to paintings and photography and more. One of our photographers, Tom Hanify, has a lovely book containing many of his outstanding photographs. Come by and spend some time browsing the work of our many talented artists.

Our featured artist is member, Codie Carman. Codie loves color and after living in Hawaii and San Diego has incorporated intense color in her paintings. She says, “I like to set a stage with my paintings telling stories with people and dogs and lots of color”. We can’t wait to see what her featured work will be!

First Saturday Art walk is December 4th from 5pm -7pm. Many artists are showing brand new work, and you don’t want to miss it. Come and meet the artists!

Island Consort

Island Consort as a performing entity is still on hiatus, but remains alive and well behind the scenes as a chamber music organization. I'd like to share a couple of project highlights by Island Consort members!

First of all, Consort Violinist Brian Kenney has spent part of the pandemic months chasing birds--or rather, birdsong! Says Brian,

"I have been a birdwatcher and listener for my entire adult life, and have always enjoyed the way that birdsong has found its way into lots of music, from ancient folk music to high classical and modern works of all types. Last year I started recording the songs and calls of birds that I encountered, and started doing rough notations of a few I found particularly interesting for one reason or another. From there, I would practice the part a bit, usually on violin but sometimes on piano or synthesizer, and if I liked it I recorded it. Filling out the recording with other parts generally happened in a semi-improvisational manner, trying out different textures or lines or sounds (and sometimes other birds!) or harmonies until some kind of approach seemed to work and connect with the primary song. Many of the tones found in birdsong do not have a clearly identifiable pitch, and though I do use some discretion in interpreting their 'notes', I do try and stay true to their rhythms for the most part, at least to the best of my ability. I approach this project in a light and playful manner for the most part, but part of what I am doing here is trying to explore the kinship I feel, and that I believe we all share, with birds and other animals and plants. I do know that every time I listen carefully, as a musician and as a person living on planet Earth, I learn something new and find inspiration to keep working with my own creativity."

Second of all, Island Consort Director Sheila Weidendorf has launched her own website for her musical endeavors. Peruse it here: sheilamakesmusic.com

Until next time…Enjoy this season of harvest!

Price Sculpture Forest
Local Coupeville sculptor Greg Neal has trained his sculpture Attacking Eagle to come in for a landing on the Nature Nurtured trail. Attacking Eagle is an impressive work in stainless steel, complete with gorgeous detail, motion, and even emotion. When you look up at this suspended life-size+ sculpture swooping down at you, Greg said that it will make you feel like the last few moments in the life of a field mouse. So true.

The Sculpture Forest is open for art and nature lovers every day of the year from 8:00am until 7:00pm or sunset (whichever occurs earlier).

We offer free admission, with donations gratefully accepted.
