Gippsland PHN Alcohol and Other Drug General Practice Education Project

Gippsland PHN is partnering with Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) to co-design and deliver the Alcohol and Other Drug General Practiced Education Project to general practitioners in Gippsland.

The project will provide educational support and resources to assist with delivery of drug and alcohol training to general practitioners and other health professionals in Gippsland.

The initial stage of the program encompasses fact finding and the collation of feedback from GPs and other relevant stakeholders on current experiences and those enablers and barriers to alcohol and other drugs treatment within general practice, and access to services and supports within the health care neighbourhood.

GPs are invited to spend no more than 10 minutes completing the survey to provide insight and feedback to inform the project.

Advanced Training in Suicide Prevention

This workshop aims to increase health professionals’ skill and confidence in taking a detailed suicide history and developing a collaborative management plan to increase the safety of people planning suicide. It also provides practical tools for health professionals managing the full spectrum of suicide risk presentations including the acute suicidal crisis, care after a suicide attempt and assisting families experiencing suicide bereavement.

This training has been subsidised by a generous philanthropic grant aimed at improving mental health in rural and regional areas across Australia.  A contribution of $75 will be required at registration.

Building Therapeutic Communication Capacity in Gippsland

This is a FREE 3 hour Workshop for SIX people only at each practice. Gippsland Regional Palliative Care Consortium (GRPCC) and Gippsland PHN are partnering to provide training to general practitioners and practice nurses on evidence based therapeutic communications skills in the context of palliative care and Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD). The communication skills learned within these workshops are transferable across the breadth of care for all patients.

Can you Read an ECG?

Come online with Margie from Travelling Annies and learn to read an ECG in 2 x 2 hour sessions from the comfort of your own home. Our ECG zoom program allows unlimited access to the knowledge and information provided in both sessions 1 and 2.

Session 1 takes you back to basics, where our aim is to give you the skills to be able to recognise a normal and abnormal rhythm. From sinus rhythm to atrial fibrillation to ventricular fibrillation and many in between.

Session 2 will build on those skills to teach recognition of an Acute Myocardial Infarction. Learn the 5 main types of infarctions, the pathophysiology behind a heart attack, the latest treatments and when and when not to give GTN and why this can be a problem.

Promoting Participation in the National Immunisation Program

The Promoting Participation in the National Immunisation program aims to expand students' knowledge and skills required to support a change of practice within their health organisation. 

On completion of the program, students will have the skills and knowledge to work directly with patients, clients, families and communities to provide advice and encouragement to ultimately improve immunisation rates for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

The program is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding of how to communicate with and support change of practice within their workplace, encouraging colleagues and peers to make immunisation activities more conducive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

VAD Medical Practitioner Training 2022

Thinking about completing voluntary assisted dying (VAD) training?
If you are a medical doctor, consider joining colleagues to complete the online training together, in a supported group workshop over one full day. 

On successful completion, you will be able to provide voluntary assisted dying assessments and participate in voluntary assisted dying to the level you feel comfortable. 

You will meet like-minded colleagues, local participating clinician/s and the state-wide support team including the pharmacists, care navigators, VAD Board, and Secretariat who oversee the portal.

Hepatitis B s100 Prescriber Course

We can beat hepatitis B – but more s100 prescribers are needed in primary care.

All Victorian GPs and nurse practitioners are encouraged to register for the next hepatitis B s100 prescriber course starting on Thursday 2 December 2021.

The course will run over 3 weeks. You will be required to complete the assigned tasks and webinars that will take approximately 2.5 hours per week.

A Systemic approach to Investigating Symptoms of Lung Cancer

In collaboration with Cancer Australia and clinical experts in lung cancer, Lung Foundation Australia has developed a free, accredited eLearning course for primary care health professionals based on Investigating Symptoms of Lung Cancer: a guide for all health professionals. A tool has been developed to assist all health professionals investigate symptomatic people with suspected lung cancer and support their early and rapid referral into the diagnostic pathway.

A systematic approach to investigating symptoms of lung cancer is accredited for 40 RACGP CPD points.

The Readiness Program 

Primary care’s readiness to address domestic and family violence

Pathways to Safety is a free training program that strengthens the capacity of primary care providers to effectively recognise, respond, refer and record Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) using a trauma and violence informed approach. 

The virtual practice-centred training program is designed to enhance a whole of practice response. Skilled GP and FV Facilitators deliver the training to all clinical and non-clinical staff over two 1.5-hour online sessions. 

‘Pathways to Safety’ is an evidence-based educational program developed by the University of Melbourne. The Readiness Program is led by Safer Families Centre.

RACGP: 6 CPD Activity Points

Diagnosis and Treatment of PTSD in Emergency Service Workers

This workshop has been designed with a focus on GPs to assist in diagnosing patients with acute stress disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and other comorbidities. Evidence-based guidelines will be used as the foundation to appropriately diagnose and identify treatment pathways including recommended referrals, trauma focused psychological therapy and psychological first aid to help support the management of emergency service workers. The training may also be relevant to other health professionals.

Foundations of Chronic Disease program


The Benchmarque Group has recently launched its new free online-only Foundations of Chronic Disease program.

Delivered completely online, the program is aimed at a range of health professionals working within Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health or have Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients, and is estimated to take less than 10 hours to complete.

The Chronic Disease Pathway extended learning options which will include nationally accredited face-to-face programs are due to be released in the next quarter. These programs are fully funded by the Australian Government Department of Health - meaning there is no cost to register and complete.

Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria Scholarship –

Focussed Psychological Strategies Skills Training for General Practitioners

RACGP and the Rural Workforce Agency of Victoria (RWAV) are offering 100 scholarships to Victorian GPs in Modified Monash Model (MMM) 3-7 and GPs working in an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation in (MMM) 1-2 + (MMM) 3-7  locations to complete Focussed Psychological Strategies Skills Training (FPS ST).

Each scholarship will provide full funding (valued at $979) to complete the course with RACGP. This program is a partnership between RWAV and RACGP with funding from the Australian Government.
