A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO...

As we reflect during this season of gratitude, we are especially thankful for you, our Members, and your dedication to important work that affects all of us.

We also are thankful for the opportunity to serve our Members, State Health Departments, and our communities through our partnerships in projects that advance chronic disease prevention efforts and promote health and health equity.

We have come far, but there is still much work to be done. Since the pandemic, more Americans have new or worsening chronic diseases. In addition, the disproportionate rates at which Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people have been affected by COVID-19 highlighted the health disparities experienced by these communities. We are committed to overcoming these barriers to ensure a healthier future for everyone, and we are encouraged by the diligence of our public health heroes on the front lines of this work.

Earlier this year, NACDD awarded funding to 20 states to promote healthy living and reduce social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic through the Building Resilient Inclusive Communities (BRIC)  program. This work will help improve people’s lives during this pandemic and has a specific focus on reducing health inequities and promoting social justice for those most impacted.

We are excited about the recent launch of our Center for Advancing Healthy Communities (CAHC), which is committed to making public health programs in communities across states and territories more effective, more equitable, and more inclusive. The Center will leverage best practices and evidence-based programming to impact food and nutrition security, physical activity and the built environment, tobacco cessation, obesity, social connectedness, chronic disease-related mental health, and equity/social justice.

Today, on Giving Tuesday, we are launching a campaign to support work erasing the health debt our communities have incurred during the pandemic. We encourage you to join us in giving back. Together we can address the enormous burden the COVID-19 pandemic has created in missed, untreated, or under-treated chronic conditions and poor health outcomes.

NACDD Presents on Addressing Social Isolation
In October, NACDD responded to the question, "How does social isolation and loneliness get addressed from a public health perspective" during the 2021 End Social Isolation and Loneliness Action Forum. Three states participating in the Building Resilient Inclusive Communities (BRIC) program, funded by the CDC, engaged in an NACDD-moderated panel discussion to share state public health perspectives around addressing and integrating social connectedness into their efforts. The BRIC program supports states in identifying their role in impacting social connectedness, strategically building and enhancing partnerships, and informing future public health practices. You can watch and view slides from the panel, where Christopher (CJ) Johnson, Active Transportation and Built Environment Specialist with the Hawaii State Department of Health; Janna Simon, Director of the Center for Policy and Partnership Initiatives with the Illinois Public Health Institute; and Tiffany Bransteitter, Obesity Prevention and Wellness Section Chief with the Pennsylvania Department of Health described the efforts underway in their respective states. Learn more →
