Donations of Christmas gifts for refugees
On 18th December Welcome House will be holding a Christmas party. We would love any donations of gifts, for children and adults. Your donations will support a community of refugees and asylum seekers.

Please, if you are able, please consider giving this year. Donations can be left at the back of church and Kathy Doughty will deliver them to Welcome House.
POSADA

Posada is a Spanish word that means 'inn', and is also the title for a Mexican Advent celebration in which two young people dressed as Mary and Joseph travelled from house to house in their village to proclaim the imminent arrival of Jesus and request that the newborn baby be given a room. On Christmas Eve they would re-enact a community play and bring figures of Mary and Joseph to be placed in a crib at church.

The idea has been updated so that nativity figures travel round, staying at a different house every night, and finally take their place in the church on Christmas Eve, ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas Day.

Mary and Joseph's journey through the parish reminds us that we need to make room for Jesus in our lives, homes and communities.

If you would like to take part all you need to do is sign up and give the little figures room in your home. We will then ask you to take them to another house the following day. There will be a little prayer to say and it is nice if you can share refreshments and take a little gift with you (perhaps a Christmas tree decoration). You can gather outside if you would prefer (on the doorstep / in the garden). Please sanitise your hands as you pass the posada from one to another
.

Celtic Eucharist Service on New Years Day

We will be having a Celtic Eucharist Service, to welcome in 2022 at midday on 1
st January 2022.
The Service will be led by Rev. Michael Yates and he will be assisted by the two Licensed Lay Readers, Steve Parkin and John Edmond.

What is a Celtic Eucharist?
It is a quiet, reflective, spiritual candlelight Eucharist service using ancient liturgy and sacred music to provide a meditative worship experience; it is a service steeped in Celtic tradition.
Musically, you will hear beautiful choral music, including that of Hildegard of Bingen (also known as Saint Hildegard and the Sibyl of the Rhine), whose music is considered to be the point where heaven and earth meet. So, it will come as no surprise that she believed harmony to be more than the combination of voices and instruments; for Hildegard, the music is truly angelic and represented the balance of body and soul. She saw music as the inter-connectivity between man and the universe. The Celtic Eucharist Service encompasses these characteristics.

Silence has a place of importance at various intervals during the service enabling peaceful reflection in the presence of God in the full splendour, history and surroundings of St Mary’s Church.  Visually, you can expect to see a sanctuary lit with candles.
The Eucharist Service is based on the liturgy used for centuries within Christian communities of Iona and Northumbria, as well as our own Anglican sources.

This is a wonderful opportunity to invite a friend, family member or acquaintance to join you.  This service is intended to be inclusive and welcoming of all people.

For those who have not experienced a Celtic Service before attached is a link to a service from the summer at St Mary’s: https://youtu.be/BethgZKARaE

We would be delighted if you are able to join us and experience Celtic Eucharist tradition in the beautiful surroundings of St Mary’s Church. You will be made most welcome. There will be refreshments after the Service in the Church.
We pray this Eucharist service will add to the fullness of worship at St Mary’s, Beverley for all.

Prayers
(broadcast each evening on Facebook)

A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *

At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households.  You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.

The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made heaven and earth.

A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.

The reading for the day (see below)**

The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.

In peace we will lie down and sleep;
for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus
for the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night watch looks for the morning
so do we look for you, O Christ.

The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.
