Running Free: December 2021
From the Bridge, with Chair John Brady:

At the heart of sail training is the ability to stay organized in the face of a wide variety of challenges, be they generated by a prolonged calm or a tremendous storm.  It is gratifying to work with people who can look at a challenge without flinching, develop a course of action to deal with that challenge, and follow through on it. Over the last two years, we have been showcasing the value of sail training when the qualities it engenders are needed most.

It is humbling and a source of pride to work with an organization comprised of so many outstanding and dedicated people who bring a wide range of accomplishments to the table. Tall Ships America members, staff, and Board of Directors are taking on issues ranging from the need for profound social change to revamping business models to suit a rapidly shifting environment. Working together, we bring a gratifying spirit of dedication and generosity to this work; those qualities give us great hope for the future of our industry.

As activities have resumed and begin to gain momentum, there is excitement for the possibilities ahead. We are the embodiment of the values sail training conveys. There is a growing need for those values as the nation's workforce shifts to confront fresh challenges. We provide a base from which to build that workforce. We have the people, the skills, and the will. Though it may be difficult to see from time to time, our future is bright. We look forward to sailing into 2022 together.

Fair winds,

John Brady
Chair of the Board of Directors
Announcement
We are pleased to announce that Tall Ships America and America250, the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 led by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, have signed a multiyear partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). We will be working together to establish and promote several initiatives that will raise awareness of the significant role of traditional sail to the country’s cultural, political and economic development alongside education and interpretation of the complicated history and continuing relevance of sail training and the tall ships today. Through a series of Tall Ships® races, festivals and events accompanied by educational offerings and shoreside interpretation, the tall ships will be a travelling showcase of 250 years of the United States’ maritime heritage.
Events
Massachusetts Maritime Academy's rich history began in 1891 aboard the USS Enterprise, a former USN barque-rigged screw sloop-of-war. Over the decades, while the Academy has continued a tradition of seamanship and training mariners for working on the ocean, they have also continued to invest in state-of-the-art training vessels. In 2022 the Academy welcomes into the fleet the newly renovated historic Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey and on the horizon in 2024 a new purpose built 524' National Security Multi-Mission Training Vessel will be brought aboard. It is a wonderful time to bring Tall Ships America members to campus as part of the wider maritime community. Tall Ships America and Mass Maritime Health Services are working closely together to follow CDC, Massachusetts and campus safety guidelines related to COVID as they evolve. The most up-to-date guidelines can be found here: COVID 19 | Massachusetts Maritime Academy.”

We were going to come up with a festive version of recommendations based on a unanimous team decision and found the words 'controversial' and 'divisive' creeping into the discussion. So, in order to restore the team's festive vibe and normal good cheer, this month’s selections were divided up among us. While not festive per se, we hope they provide welcome respite in the quieter moments of your holiday festivities.

Erin says: While I don't have much interest in seeing the movie, the book House of Gucci was a wild ride of fashion, murder, and excess. It was a fascinating depiction of the Gucci brand and family, and deliciously salacious.

Nic strongly recommends: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the stop-motion classic outshines all the other holiday movies. Yukon Cornelius, Rudolph, and Hermey’s journey never gets old! (Ed Note: And it's the only holiday movie Nic deems worth owning, which speaks for itself.)

Amanda offers: During the holiday season, I listen to a lot of Mannheim Steamroller (naturally). Now I am on winter break I've been catching up on podcasts I haven't had the chance to enjoy, A Barque, a Brig and a Schooner being one of them! Another is called Seltzer Squad about two teetotalers and how they stay sober while living in New York City.
