WAL's 100 Under 100 Show Returns!

Give the gift of art this holiday season, "100 Under 100" is an exhibit of one hundred works created by local artists that are under one hundred dollars. Opening reception is on Friday, December 3rd from 6pm-8pm at WAL Public Market, 1104 R Street, Sacramento CA 95811.

Ready, Set, Build!
Financing lined up for 137-unit project near R Street

With $59 million of financing in place, work is on the verge of starting for a six-story, 137-unit urban housing project on the red-hot R Street Corridor in Sacramento. Anthem Properties Group Ltd.'s project on the southeast corner of 15th and S streets should get underway by month's end and be completed by early 2024, said Riaan Debeer, vice president of development with Anthem, in an email. "Yes, we just secured our financing, and we are very excited to see this project move forward as well," he said. Anthem is already underway on a similar project of 153 units at 11th and J streets in Downtown Sacramento.

Vrilakas Groen Architects submit plans for a four-story, 23-unit building called The Ironside at 1008 S St.

The bar believed to be among the oldest in Sacramento is getting a new, taller neighbor. Sacramento's Planning Division is processing an application for a four-story, 23-unit building called The Ironside at 1008 S St., just east of Old Ironsides. According to plans, the building would be on the footprint of a single-story complex of small commercial buildings and a neighboring parking lot. Units in the building would consist of 13 with one bedroom, seven with one-and-a-half bedrooms and three with two bedrooms. Sizes would range from 486 to 891 square feet.

Free Holiday Parking Returns

The City of Sacramento will modify its parking meter operating hours during the holiday season in select areas to incentivize residents and visitors to dine, shop and attend events in downtown and midtown. From Nov. 25 to Dec. 25, no payment will be required at select on-street meters after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends within the holiday parking zones. This includes green meter payment machines. Meter screens will reflect when parking is free and when payment is required.

City to receive $500,000 Grant form National Endowment for the Arts to distribute to Sacramento artists

The City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts & Culture has been selected to receive an American Rescue Plan grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to help the arts and cultural sector recover from the pandemic. The Office of Arts & Culture will receive $500,000 to be distributed in the form of grants and peer support to Sacramento artists – a population hit hard by COVID-19 related impacts. The Office of Arts & Culture plans to provide grants to artists to help them further their creative work in the community and begin to build capacity to sustain their practice.

Emerging Artist Spotlight 

Growing up, Ember de Boer was the kind of kid who always had something to draw with in her hand and explained to her mother that she felt compelled to make drawings every day. Now at 23, de Boer is studying art and philosophy at Sacramento State. She creates works of art in the university’s art sculpture lab, which have now been featured in the Union Gallery and at the “Emerging Artist Showcase” in the Arthouse on R Street, Sacramento. “Trace Elements,” featuring de Boer’s most recent work can be viewed at Arthouse on R until December 30th.

New Phase of Ice Blocks: more housing, retail space

Years after the Ice Blocks project on the R Street Corridor in Sacramento appeared to be completed, the developer has filed plans for a new phase. Heller Pacific Inc. filed plans for a new six-story structure called Ice Box on what's now a parking lot at 1701 R St., with 65 units, ground-floor retail and other features. "A surface parking lot is not the highest and best use for such a prime location," Heller Pacific CEO Mike Heller said in an email.
