A Note from the Directors' Desks

There’s a brutal beauty about the cold. There's no avoiding its transformative force, how green earth becomes white, snowy desert. At night, the winds howl and we wonder where the wildlife went. At dawn, we wake up to new tracks in the snow. We sip hot drinks on the warmer side of the window - cozy and comfortable - beside a crackling fire, book in hand.

In this edition of the “Write Now,” we’re writing from that same “warmer side of the window.” We’re looking out at all of the world-class programs coming to our creative community in 2022.

Our mission at Write On has always been to make great arts programs more accessible to all people, and it’s for that reason that we’re offering early-bird discounts on all of our major events for 2022. First up is Diane Wilson’s prose Master Class, titled, “Telling True Stories: Memoir to Fiction” January 24-28, followed by our Young Writers Conference, March 18-19.

Additionally, we have exciting news to share about a grant Write On, Door County received from the Women’s Fund of Door County! It’s a fantastic (and FREE) opportunity for the women in our community who are interested in writing, but might not have had access (or time) until now.

And last, but certainly not least, you’ll find information about the peninsula’s newest piece of literature - the 8142 Review - a showcase of writing and photography from the Peninsula Pulse and Write On, Door County. In these pages, you will find stories about family, farmlands and addictions, love affairs and ailing hearts, and photos capturing moments in time and stories untold.

We encourage you to stop by the Writing Center sometime soon to get a glimpse of what 2022 looks like from our side of the window.

Warmly,

The Early Bird Gets the *Discount*

The Art of Telling True Stories

In this class, award-winning Dakota writer Diane Wilson will lead participants on an exploration of that mysterious amalgam of elements that create true, authentic, compelling stories which are foundational to both memoirs and novels.

Through discussion, handouts, and writing exercises, participants will explore three elements that are critical to story: character development, world building, and creating the right form to carry the intent of the narrative.

Writers are encouraged to use their free time to write, connect, and nurture their creativity.

Beating the "Fund" Drum

Our biggest fundraiser of the year is still rolling forward! Every dollar donated directly benefits educational programs in our community for people of all ages.

2022 is set to be our biggest year yet, and it wouldn’t be possible without your generous support.

The Write On team can’t thank you enough for all of your help. We hope you’ll stop by the Writing Center sometime - even if just to say hello.

In 2021, donations of:
  • $30 supported free registrations for writing classes at our Center.
  • $70 sponsored memberships to families in our community.
  • $150 gave more children the opportunity to participate in our Kids WOW Summer Camp - allowing more young minds to learn the powers of writing.
  • $500 provided local K-12 classrooms with regularly occurring writing programs, featuring visiting artists from around the world.
  • $2500 donations brought celebrated and distinguished writers to our nationally recognized residency on Juddville Road.

Empowered Women Empowering Women

Women of Door County! Our very own Lauren Ward will be teaching a monthly workshop at the Writing Center for a group of women who are interested in writing, but may not have had access or time until now.

This unique opportunity is 100% FREE, due in large part to a grant from the  Women's Fund of Door County.

This program is open to all women, aged high school and up. At this time, the class is planned for the second Saturday of each month, 9-11am with a kick-off event on the evening of January 7th and the morning of the 8th (9-11am) for the first workshop.

Hal Prize Winners & the NEW 8142 Review

The Peninsula Pulse has announced the recipients of the 2021 Hal Prize for writing and photography! This year’s honorees were selected from the largest field of submissions in the contest’s 24-year history.

What started out as an annual literary edition of the Pulse has grown into its own publication. 8142 Review is not a replacement for the Hal Prize, but an expansion of it and is a new home for the creative talents of their submitters.

Within its pages, you will find stories about family, farmlands and addictions, love affairs and ailing hearts, and photos capturing moments in time and stories untold.

Copies of the 8142 Review are available on the Peninsula Pulse's website!
